Head light wiring upgrade, so many choices, are they all the same??

I have searched and searched and came up with many choices for a wiring relay upgrade. H4 headlights also. When i drive at nite, i might as well leave the lights off cause i still cant see the road LOLOLOLOL.

I have seen these relay harness from $29.99 to over $200.00
My question is, ARE they pretty much all the same?? some of them you have to ground each headlight pig tail individually, some you dont. I have seen some wire up differently than others. Cheap and quality looking one's..

I would love to buy a quality built 1 but not for $170.00. I assume they use bosch or equal relays with thicker gauge wire. $29.99 well you can tell they are just what they are, Cheap parts (relays)

I am not a electrical guy. I can build, fab, paint, everything but electrical. I seen some prints to build my own and dont understand the print lol.

Anyone know someone who builds these with quality parts??

GMACHINZ on this forum sell them. I am not sure of the price but he uses good quality components.

I got these a few years back, they work great. You can use with stock switch but I did mount a couple relays. One for high and one for low beam. Getting a couple light sockets and pigtails from a donor harness means no wire cutting on your truck harness , just use some spade connectors from original harness to relays and use donor pigtails/sockets to new lights. HELLA 002395991 7" H4 Type Single High/Low Beam Headlamp. Got mine through Amazon.

I got this setup four years ago and it has operated since with no problems at all. No wiring changes, no grounding straps, it just plugs into your existing headlight connectors and onto the headlights. The only wiring you have to do is + and - on the battery. Really, it's like a five-minute install. Includes everything, all prewired, and the wiring is long enough even for our trucks. Has the high-temp headlight connectors. $24.99!

OK, so everyone will say "cheap relays!" and tell you to build your own kit with Bosch relays, etc, etc. Fine. But this was $25, took five minutes to install, and works fine, thank you very much.

It's about 20% of the way down this huge web page, and is called a headlight brightener -- what we would call a relay kit. I used a two-headlight H4 one for the '78. For the four headlight front end, you would need one of the four headlight ones. Are you sure you are using H4 bulbs on the four headlight front end?

Yeah, I still haven't had any troubles with it. After five years, I would be willing to have to buy another one for $25 to fix it if it died, but it works just fine.

Does the autolumination kit use fusible link or circuit breaker for protection?

It's a fuse, IIRC. One of those fuse holders molded into the wire.

A friend had a China ebay kit on his XJ and it stopped working.

I'd be very surprised at fusible links on lighting for anything remotely modern.

They're pretty much all the same if you're running standard 55W headlights. If you're running anything higher, I'd check gauges and make sure you're running a better made harness.

I have personal preferences with regards to factory color coded upgrades with heavier gauge (and properly rated) underhood wiring. I don't use the EBay ceramic connectors because they're about as good as toothpaste and they use Chinese versions of the Packard 59-series terminals. I use sealed 630-series fuse holders and genuine Packard connectors/terminals. I don't like my upgrades not looking like the rest of the vehicle harness.

Hey gmachinz, do you have a website that shows your different harness options? I tried Googling HARNESSWORX from your sig but came up empty. Besides the headlight upgrade I wanted to check out your engine harnesses since a 5.3 is next on my list...

They have a 2 headlight and 4 headlight kit at classic industries. i used the 2 headlight kit for my '78, with some H4 lights and some new adjustment screws from classic industries, and i am really happy with them. my headlight connectors were worn, and didnt fit the headlight correctly. The realay plugs into either headlight connector, and then you just find power and ground and you are good to go. My install took way longer to do than 5 minutes because I couldn't find my drill or drill bits. Once i found my drill and bits, then i spent a bunch more time thinking where i wanted to put the relays. i screwed them to the top of the radiator shroud, ugly, but the cable reached the lug on my starter, so i could install without cutting wires. They work really well, a must do upgrade.
