who's been into a loose tilt column?
search is disabled and I know this has been covered before, but who's fixed or at least been deep into a loose tilt column? My 91 suburban has a way loose tilt and Im thinking about tackling it this weekend. The haynes manual makes it seem pretty easy. Is something just loose or worn out in there, or what? I have another tilt from an 80 something truck that I could use for parts if needed but Im hoping its just tightening some bolts while Im in there.
Any insight would be great. Thanks mike |

haven't been in there for years but if I remember right (and I think I do) it was just labour, there's four nuts that need to be tightened, I could only reach three on mine, it worked but it was a little stubborn, good luck.

This is the best I've seen out there and what I've used for my tilt column when I tore into mine. http://home.t-online.de/home/O_Scholz/steering.html You may have more trouble with the wiper and cruise control on the turn signal but should be just more wires. Not that hard but it takes alot of time and trying to remember where everything goes back can be trouble. Once you get those bolts just use some red loc-tite and you're set.

Its not quite as hard as some make it out to be. Just remember where everything goes, and get the proper tools... I did mine using a bar of scrap metal, and it was rough going... There are four bolts right at the very end that need tightening, also look for any broken parts, mine had a broken peice I had to weld...
The above tutorial is also what I used, some stuff was different, but it was very very helpful regardless! Good luck and have fun =)

YAY! I'll finally be able fix my damn loose column. And I thought I was the only one with this problem. So, I guess I'll pull my new steering wheel off AGAIN. No worries

I had that happened to me a few years back, the bearing at the very top of the column was desinergrated(sp). Even had a few of the little bearings roll out of the column while driving. Also the 2 led bolts were the column tilts were worn. I replaced those, and the bearing, the steering column was like new again.
