1958 Apache build from orange to ?
As you can see I am usually on the 60-66 site. I just started working on my neighbors 58 Apache short step side. The truck looks good but when you get into it needs some work. Who ever put it together didn't have any bolts that were the same. I spent the past two days taking apart the bed and front end. Next the engine will come out and the the cab. The plans for the truck is to take it to the frame and clean, paint and update anything that it needs. The body will come off and get blasted, repaired before the painter gets it. I still don't know the color yet its up to the owner. I'm hoping to get is all tore down in two weeks so I can get all the parts off to be blasted.

Looks good so far.
Did you know you could have taken the entire front clip off as a unit by removing 8 bolts, disconnecting the upper & lower radiator hoses, and the head/signal light wiring? Radiator and front cross brace all come with it. For color may I suggest....orange! These trucks looks great on orange. Do a search, there one on all Orange trucks.

I found metal siding screws holding the bed together. I agree on the Orange. I like the Orange that's on it now. The owner wants a satin color. Orange was one of the colors he's looking at. Re: 1958 Apache build from orange to ?
Today I made some progress on the build. I removed the engine, trans, wiring harness, seat, glass, doors and everything in the interior. The last step is to build a dolly and get the cab off so I can start working on the frame while the sheet metal is at the blaster. I also found out it looks like the original color was red. I found it in some hidden places in the cab.

Re: 1958 Apache build from orange to ?
Thanks everybody! Today my plans are to walk the owner around the truck today and show him what I have done and which way to go. Color is still up in the air but I do know its flat or satin. Once I get the cab off I'll start cleaning up the cab and engine. I tested the new engine mounts yesterday from what was there. I guess the old ones were for a six because it mounted in the center of the front cross member. The new mounts are going to push the engine back 1.5 in which is going to change the whole alignment of the engine and trans. Has anybody used these mounts? Any lessons learned would be great!

Re: 1958 Apache build from orange to ?
Took the truck to the blaster last week. I'm happy because it gives me a chance to get started on the engine. I thought it would be a fast 1 day job but I was wrong. I have around 10 hrs in cleaning, stripping and painting the engine. It had three layers of paint on the motor and I had to get it all off before I painted it. I went with gray for the engine color. After some research I found that the V8 3100 trucks came in gray. So thats what we want with. Here is the dress up set I ordered for the engine, I think it will look cool and still have that old vibe to it.
Heres the gray engine with the old dress up kit. The light was badso the pic didn't come out as good as I wanted to.

Re: 1958 Apache build from orange to ?
Took all day to get the dress up kit installed because of fitment issues with the intake. I had to shave off some of the intake and the rocker cover to get it to fit the engine. The old kit had the same problem with the intake and cover fitment. But I finally got it to fit correctly anger some filling and shaving. I also painted in-between the fins.

Re: 1958 Apache build from orange to ?
Finally got the cab and chassis back from the blaster. It came out better than I thought it would. Cancer on the Floors, steps, back of cab and little on the roof so overall not bad. Last night we ordered the rear tank and all the sheet metal for the cab. So I guess I will be doing some cutting and welding in the future. I hope to have the frame painted and all the new suspension in by next weekend. I am still waiting on the replacement rear end to come back from the blaster. I'll be happy once I get it painted, engine and trans installed and rolling chassis again. Then I'll start on the cab.

Re: 1958 Apache build from orange to ?
Did some work on the 58 today. I got the trans drained and ready to get sent out, removed the cab, built a stand for the cab (noticed the blaster broke a cab bolt) and test fitted the motor mounts with the engine. So overall a good day for prep work. I am still waiting for the rear leaf springs, shackles and axle to get all the suspension mounted. Once it all gets here I can make some good progress on the truck. I'm happy I got the cab off today!

Re: 1958 Apache build from orange to ?
Did a little suspension work yesterday. I installed the 2.5 front, 4in rear and original axle. I also replaced all the pins and bushing in the suspension. I ordered a power steering kit, front disk kit, all brake parts and drums It;s coming along well the only problem is waiting on the parts.

Re: 1958 Apache build from orange to ?
Did a little more work on the truck last week. I installed the engine, Trans and welded the front frame horns. I don't know why both truck I have worked on the horns are messed up? I started cutting out the bad metal on the cab. I removed the lower door mount and step on the left side. I will install both and put in a before I cut out the floor pan.

Re: 1958 Apache build from orange to ?
He helps by getting all the parts. He's really good about it, all I do is say what I need and he gets it! I think next week he wants to get out and do some work on it.
