U-Joint and Carrier Bearing Part Numbers - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I will be pulling my transmission this weekend.

Since it is coming out I want to replace the u-joints and carrier bearing. The carrier bearing is shot and I have at least one joint that feels rough when you spin the cap.

Last night I spent an hour at Rock Auto and O'Reilly websites - it made my head hurt, especially Rock Auto.

I think (from what I read / misunderstood) that the same u-joint is used at all 3 spots. I think I have narrowed it down to one of 3 joints: Spicer 5153X, Spicer 5178X, or Spicer 513101X

And to 2 carrier bearings: Spicer 210527X and National HB206FF.

Can someone who has done this point me in the right direction?

http://www.driveshaftspecialist.com/...D%20Guide.html Heres a web page to identify u-joints. mine is the 1310 series. There are 2 types of carrier bearings; Mine is the 206FF. its for the 1.1811 bore. You'll have to measure the shaft it rides on to be sure. the other style that I know of bolts on completely different and the bore diameter is different..

Thanks hamjet, that webpage has been printed! If I get my driveway maintenance done early enough tonight I will try and pull the joints to measure them. Thank you!

Since the driveshaft should be balanced after replacing a ujoint or carrier bearing why not just let the pros worry about the part numbers. They will be able to better check the condition of your existing parts, straighten the shaft if it needs to be straightened, reinstall all of the parts properly and balance the shaft as an assembly so you don't have a vibration, premature wear, or a broken carrier mount after 100 miles.

You're in marshfield, take that shaft up to rick and carl at powertrain industries off of pythian in springfield. Tell them Brad sent you... they might charge you double

I buy the joints and carrier bearing. 1st joint I did I put it in wrong and the grease zerk would have been sheared off - and it was so tight I could barely swivel it.

A man must eventually learn his limitations - so i pressed out the joint, returned the remaining joints and bearing for a refund and dropped off my drive shaft at PowerTrain in Springfield. It was ready the next afternoon. They even knocked $40 off the quote they gave over the phone because I had already removed the old joints and carrier.

5-153X and 5-13101X are both 1310 series u-joints. 5-178X is a 1350 series joint. It is much bigger than the 1310s. The difference between the others is 5-153X is greasable and the 5-13101X is non greasable. The carrier bearing numbers are both for the same bearing just different brands.

I wound up letting the shop do mine, but the part numbers on my invoice for my 67,C10, LWB are:
U-joints: 5-153X
Center support bearing: 210527X
Slip yoke: 2-3-6081x
All were Spicer

I agonized over the same thing. Got under the truck and checked out what I had. Figured out what parts I needed. Ordered and received them. Pulled the driveshaft out and realized the yoke on the front was buggered up and was going to need a new one welded on. Dragged all my parts up to the driveshaft shop and was done with it.

Should have just pulled it and taken it over there in the first place.
