Insurance . . . .
Hey I was wondering what everyone has in the way of insurance. I have full coverage on my truck but I just realized that it's probably harder to value a 1970 restored pickup than it is to value a late model truck. I don't want to be in a situation where somebody hits my truck and the insurance company values it at 3k and totals it because of a smashed bed or something like that. I was considering getting it appraised and sending that to my insurance company or maybe just having the appraiser keep it on file. I will talk to my dad, he is a lawyer and deals with insurance companies all the time. Basically the way I understand it is that my insurance coverage is essentialy the same as it was on my last truck ('98 Dakota). I will have to find out, I haven't been involved enough in this aspect of my truck. It is the only thing my parents pay for me so they tend to take care of it. Thanks much for any advice.

the ONLY bad part about an appraisal is they will charge you for the appraosed value of the vehicle not by how old it is. and damn i want to move where you live my truck if totalled is valued at $650 canadian so whats that a dollar american ? but ya i would get an appraisal

Check Grundy insurance. No appraisal is needed. It is stated value insurance. One catch is you have to have a garage. The benefit is no mileage limit per year and it's cheap from what I gathered. I currently don't have insurance with them but will probably pursue it in the future. I don't have full coverage because they will total the truck for a few hundred dollars damage with a normal insurance company. I strongly suggest you find out what damage value your insurance company will total your truck for. I guarantee it will upset you.

The bad thing about the collector car insurance is most of them state that you can't use your vehicle for anyhing other than going to car shows or cruises. I had mine appraised then I gave a copy to my agent and that was the agreed amount.

The best way I have heard of to insure a classic is to get an agreed value policy. You and the insurance company agree on the value and if it's totaled that is what they pay.Check your insurance several ways and find out your options. It's important to have insurance check-ups on your cars, home and life at least every 2-3 years.Don't just buy what your agent suggests, make him give you the options and make an informed decision.

SAFECO
I had PEMCO insurance, but a little shopping around got me a great deal. I pay $250 per year. 100% replacement cost, zero deductible, unlimited mileage, unlimited useage, towing to the garage (or home) of my choice.

And obviously you guys are all over 25 because with any of the classic insurance places you must be 25 years old or have 10 years driving experience. And you sign a waver saying that nobody under the age of 25 will be driving the vehicle. Sucks being young. All I have on my truck is Liability. Its under my dads name so its only $56 every six months, I asked about insurance if it was in my name and they told me $90 some dollars. If I put full coverage on it its $135 per month. So with the money I'm saving, if I do wreck it I could already afford another truck And with classic insurance SOME places limit your miles per year too. I put on over 6,000 in the last 3 months and I think they say only 2,500 per year.

yes - have an appraisal.... give the appraisal to the insurance company, and ask if it is possible to put a milage limit on your vehicle.
i have mine valued at $8k. i limit the miles that i am allowed to put on the truck each year, and i have another vehicle to drive in the winter.... the insurance on my truck comes out to only $35 every six months. ($70 a year) and thats FULL coverage! jewels.

What kind of liability coverage comes with those replacement value policies?
And has anyone ever actually tried to collect it from these small companies?

my replacement value is anything up to $8k because of the appraisal. i have not tried to personally collect on it, but i know someone who has, and had no problems.
i should mention that i had to 'declare' my truck as a classic/antique, and in indiana, if you declare it a classic/antique, you have to have an antique plate. this is no big deal. (although i have heard that in some other states, if you antique-plate your vehicle, you are really limited on using it as a driver). but in indiana, i use my truck as a driver (except in winter). i should also mention that i am over age 25, which drops my insurance prices. also, i have a clean record. (thus, a lower price). jewels.

Thanks for the info. My dad said my truck is insured at TMV (true market value) so even after it has been damaged its value can be assessed. He said it will be ok. I'm not planning on crashing it anyway so it shouldn't be a problem. In case anybody cares . . . my insurance is $1600 a year. I'm 17 with a clean record and good grades. Not sure why they give a discount for good grades but it certainly doesn't seem to be much of a discount. Peace-

I have Grundy. The biggest restiction on my classic insurance is that I don't drive the truck to work everyday. The rep from grundy, that was at the fall hershy antique car meet, said of course everyone wants to show thier car off at work when it's nice out.Just not every day.I had to take pics from all 4 sides and a pic of the truck in the garage. It must be garaged.$135 a year for $10000.00.

To repeat an earlier question: what kind of liabilty can you get on those agreed value policies. Replacement is worse than worthless if you're in court being sued (or in jail for not having liability).
