Door trim panels

I am making my own full door length, door trim panels. I'm using the original style interior door handle and window crank handle and Altman latches. I can see that when I attach the trim panel, the flat bar that connects the inside handle to the latch will rub on the inside of the trim panel causing it to bind while opening the door from the inside. If I make an "edge" around the inside of the door trim panel it would give some clearance, but then I think it would be too hard to attach the inside handle to the shaft because of the thickness of the panel. Any ideas how to solve this dilemma?

if you use ABS for the panel its not an issue, the abs lets it slide, it will bulge at that point but not to the degree that it looks odd.

I had the same problem and I also have the Altman latches. I threw out the flat bars and made small diameter steel rods like your typical car uses. I formed the rods so they lay down into the recessed part of the door, heated about 3/4" on each end with a torch and hammered them flat. Then I drilled holes in the flat ends and mounted them to the door handle and latches. Simple, cheap and they work great. Sorry no pictures.

Thanks for the input. I will look into both of those ideas. I wonder why the flat bar does not travel in the recessed area on the door frame. Maybe a hold over from a different year, possibly pre fifty one with one piece glass?

As I remember did we turn the handle upside down (180*) on one side and it fit into the channel in the door

I have slept since I put the doors together so I may have been dreaming!!

I built up the area so the linkage could move freely.
