New member just picked up a 67'

New here, but not new to the game. I've been a member on Chevelle Tech for years. Chevelle is almost done. Always wanted a C10 and fate brought me to this turd the other day. Its a 67' LWB, SBW. Its rough but mostly complete. 250, manual that was converted to floor shift. Probably paid to much ($1k)

Not sure what to do with it. I've always wanted to do air ride...

Here is my dilemma. The guy I got it from bought it at an auction a year ago. He never ran it and the tags expired in 05' so its probably been sitting for a long time. I drained the oil today and it was water at first and then sludgy oil like tar. Dumped in some extra oil, trans fluid and diesel while it was draining to try and flush it out. Put in a battery and it will crank but no start. Coil was out of spec so I put in a new one and no go. The spark is so weak. Pulled the cap and the points, cap and rotor all look new. Cleaned the plugs and nothing.

Is it worth spending any more time on this engine? With that much water the bearings are likely toast. I know nothing about 250's. Usually run small blocks.

Thoughts?

Id post some pics but since I am new its not gonna happen.

Welcome to the board.
If the engine will turn over then it's probably not a boat anchor yet but because it has been wet inside for an unknown amount of time it will need a rebuild regardless however if you want to see if you can bring it back without a rebuild then pull the head off and see what it looks like inside the cylinder walls and if its not a nightmare in there then reinstall the head with a new gasket and replace the oil filter with a Fram tough guard filter and fill her up with some cheap generic 5w30 oil and use some liquid engine detergent for the recommended time then check the compression on each cylinder and see where they are at, you will know quickly whether or not it needs a rebuild.
Though honestly I'm not sure it's worth the money you will spend just to clean it up and test the compression.
Go get yourself a imgur.com membership and start posting some pics.

If she cranks, she should start. Keep working on it to get it running.

agree get it running if you have compression and oil pressure, the water is a build up of 5 years of condensation ,that would be normal for a engine that was not properly put in storage .

Welcome to the board!!! Sounds like you're very knowledgeable. I didn't know if you checked resistance on the plug/coil wires or not. Thought I'd throw it out there. IMO I would try and get it to run. Be a good gas miler/parts truck until you amass the parts for the build! Good luck and have fun with it!

Welcome!!!! Yes it is worth the time to spend on the engine. Fuel air spark is all you need to run an engine.

pull the plugs to look for rust

pull the pan to look for rust and clean it out.

pour some 50/50 mix of diesle and 30 wt into each cylinder and let it soak before turning over if its stuck. soak for a while.

fill the carb with 50/50 to and let its gaskets absoarb some life sustaining juice.

even if your engine needs rebuilding these measures will make it easireir when you do.

bet you need at least a new head gasket too. either way. good excusw to look down in the cylinders.

Re: New member just picked up a 67'

Ehh, too late for preparedness... I started it today. Put in a new condenser and adjusted the points and bammo, Spark!

I runs rough and the carb started popping and backfiring. I assume the ignition system is still out of wack.

Tried to pull it out of the shop so I could breathe and it died. No start and no spark again. Messed with it for a bit and gave up. Changed the oil again.

Not sure what I want to do. Thought about canning the old points system and picking up one of those cheapo HEI's on evil bay. But, its not really going to matter as I'm not going to drive it. It would just be nice if I could pull it in and out while its being worked on.

Any ideas why I would lose spark again?
