Removing the engine with a manual trans
Hey guys I was wondering...when you have a manual trans and you want to remove the engine is it just a matter of unbolting the bell housing and the front mounts and pulling the engine with leaving the driveline in place? or is it too much of a pain to align the input shaft later when replacing it...I am new to manual trannies so a question I need to answer before I do my T5 swap. Thanx

Yep....just unhook everything from the engine. Take the bellhousing to block bolts out and the bellhousing/trans will remain in place. If you plan to swap the trans anyways, you may just consider pulling them at the same time. Some pickers will lift high enough, sometimes you need to let the air out the front tires to give you the extra inch or so. Either way....its easier with the hood removed in my opinion.
As for reinstall...it does make it a little harder to reinstall just the engine only when the trans/bellhousing are in place on a manual. As long as you use the clutch alignment tool to center the clutch disk and an extra set of hands it can be done though.

I found that removing the radiator support and other stuff made it very simple. Tranny and engine came out together. Not the only way to do it but I was parting the truck out anyway, so all of it was coming off anyway sooner or later.

I second Lugnutz 65. Here's my picture and previous discussion (see link below). I pulled a 305 V6 and three speed overdrive tranny with cast iron cases in one lift. It was a heavy load, but with the front end removed, I did it by myself with no issues.

I didn't want to get into pulling the motor yet...I'm going ahead with the T5 swap then next fall pull that 283....

Jack up the rear of the engine up so the bell is about 1/2 inch off the bell cross member. Don't jack it up more or the fan will hit the radiator. Support the back corner of the engine block with a jack stand. Support the tranny somehow (if it's still on the bell) to reduce binding when you try to remove the bolts that hold the bell to the engine block. Unbolt the bell and tranny as a unit (or separately). If the cab is still on the frame, you will struggle with the tranny because it's heavy. So have a helper. I hope I didn't forget anything.

you did originally ask about removing the engine.
if you are re & re'ing the trans there is no sense in removing the b/housing. you can drop the clutch out the bottom and the flywheel if required. why make more work for yourself ron |

When I removed the 250 six from my 82, I supported the oil pan with a floor jack and a 2x6, and then pulled the 3-speed trans from the bell housing and wrestled it to the floor. Lifting out the long engine was then a piece of cake.
