700r4 driveshaft length question
so i have a 69 long bed that has a 350 sitting in the inline 6 perches and a th350 behind it.
I want to put in a 700r4 and was wondering if i move the motor to the v8 perches upfront then put the 700r4 in, would i still have to have the driveshaft cut? |

Re: 700r4 driveshaft length question
There's one sure way to find out. Put a 700R4 in your truck and get out your tape measure.......

Re: 700r4 driveshaft length question
Rarely do you luck out with an engine swap.
As much planning as you can do, will not see all roadblocks of a swap unless you've done one before or have someone that has done them prior. Have plenty of cash on hand or plenty of time to complete it. Bill |

Re: 700r4 driveshaft length question
the yoke should engage the splines of the transmission tail shaft for a minimum distance or depth of three inches.

Re: 700r4 driveshaft length question
I have a 68 GMC C20 longbed, 350 engine, 700r4 trans. The previous owner removed the inline six and installed the 350/700r4 combo. If I remember correct the origional V6 mounts were riveted to the frame. My current mounts are bolted in so I assume they were moved. I don't think my driveshaft has been cut. I can measure my driveshafts and post pics of my motor mounts if you would like.

Re: 700r4 driveshaft length question
Driveshaft shop only charged 45$ to cut down my 700R4 drive shaft. I kept the turbo 400 original DS in case I ever wanted to go back. just had to move carrier bearing cross member. NAPA had a conversion ujoint to mate up to my Dana 60.

Re: 700r4 driveshaft length question
I've already been through this multiple times with my truck, and friends' trucks. The way you know for sure, is to measure with everything in place, suspension sitting where you want it (raised, lowered, bagged, whatever), on level ground. You can attempt to calculate the exact measurement you need, but a good driveshaft shop can take your measurement from yoke to yoke and calculate the distance needed for the slip yoke.

Re: 700r4 driveshaft length question
Yes. About 3 inches. I just did this swap, sounds exactly like what you are doing. See my build thread for more.

Re: 700r4 driveshaft length question
Put the engine in as far back as possible, have the shaft cut and balanced, and never look back.
I've had 3 different length driveshafts in my truck only one driveline swap and no wheelbase changes.
