Need help--71 vapor canister location
Can anyone share a photo of an installed stock vapor canister on a 71 C10? 307 2 bbl. I've got mine all cleaned up and ready to go back on and didn't take a photo before removal. Any help is appreciated.
Thanks, Phil |

Re: Need help--71 vapor canister location
The canister on my '71 was removed and stored in the bed side compartment when I purchased my truck. But, I believe the correct location is on the right fender just behind the core support. Down low between battery and fender.

Mine is a 72 with a 350. I don't know if they are exactly the same or not, but perhaps these might help

Re: Need help--71 vapor canister location
I've had some recent experience with canisters of late. You do know if the charcoal isn't loose then it's no longer working properly? At any rate, mine was bad and not worth saving.
At any rate: Purchase #1, early 71 part #. The canister is beautiful. I noticed the internal element, was pretty dirty, as the filter you can access. No problem, at least one filter can be replaced without opening it. As I'm polishing it (again) I see charcoal coming out. Big hole in the inner element. Charcoal looked fresh. Either I broke through the element by shaking it or possibly, they damaged it trying to replace the charcoal without cutting it open. Still, it was basically free. I'll cut the my old one open for practice, then cut the newer one and restore. I bought what I think will work for that inner element, however any suggestions for what this part is supposed to be is appreciated. Purchase #2: GM replacement part for 71-72. Pending receipt, but by the looks of the canister and filter, it was never used. If true, then it was a sweet deal.

Thanks Warmonger and 71CSB. Mine is in fine shape and just needed some external cleanup and a re-paint.

Re: Need help--71 vapor canister location
I have this to look forward to in the coming weeks. I took most of my front end off to repaint the parts and that included the charcoal canister. My father unhooked it and I'll have to figure out how to make it work again. At least now the bracket is rust free. I'll try and get a new canister.

Re: Need help--71 vapor canister location
Newbie question - Summit Racing sells what is probably a generic canister.
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/sm...olet/year/1973 If my '72 Cheyene already has a canister is it usable forever or do they wear out or get plugged. Someone cut off the hoses and I have a gas smell in the cab so I want to get the vapor system back up and running. I don't want to waste money but if they do get less efficient over time I'm OK with a generic one to use as a driver, while storing the old one. Are they all pretty much the same? What are your thoughts? Thanks Last edited by GTCS; 03-30-2016 at 12:01 AM. |
