87 tbi Sputters after warmed up

Ok guys I am new to the TBI world. I bought a 87 last year and so far its been fine, however yesterday I was up in the mountains, where it performed fine. But when I got back in the city I took off from a stop light and it sputtered in the mid-range, not like fall on its face but you could hear the exhaust stuttering. When i got home i popped the hood and the passenger side exhaust on the back side almost looked like it was slightly glowing red... I drove it today and it only seems to do it when warmed up and pulling off a 55MPH road onto a 35... then it sputters mid throttle..

Any ideas??

Mine is doing the same thing. The weather ha gotten cold here in VA, I have an aluminum intake and my guess is the distributor came loose from constant heat and cool. I can turn it so my timing is all maagooed right now.

Re: 87 tbi Sputters after warmed up

Today on my way home it started to do this surging after it was warmed up, about 8 minutes of driving. So i pulled over and shut it off, then back on, and it ran fine, all the way home about 4 minutes..... Im new to this TBI stuff,, someone wanna direct my path ??

I have an 87 TBI too. My guess, and this is only a guess you might be experiencing a lean condition if you say the exhaust is trying to glow. This can be caused by low fuel pressure, (plugging filter or failing fuel pump) or one or more engine management sensors failing up to and including the ecm. I would not go throwing parts at it until you can narrow down the cause.

Not sure if your running a catalytic converter still but if it was not functioning properly (starting to plug), it could cause your exhaust to become overheated and glow red too.

I know this is not much help but it could be something to consider.

Many TBI issues can be tied to a restricted Fuel Filter, Always check that first.
