Re: Power brakes
Welcome to the board. Yes you can put power brakes on your truck.
You'll need the following: (if I missed anything, please chime in) The booster The pedal rod for the booster The brackets and supports. If you're CAREFUL, you can stretch your brake lines to the Proportioning block, but the are not expensive to replace., if you live up north, it's a good idea to replace all your lines. When I did my conversion, I went and found a complete setup from a truck in a salvage yard, and bought everything related to the brakes. When I got it home, I used the booster and master cylinder as a core for new ones from the auto parts store. It's been a while, but I think I paid 20 or 30 dollars for all the parts, then 110 for the new booster and MC. Maybe less. Good luck on the project, you picked the best place for info and guidance. |

Re: Power brakes
Im in the same position. After you did the power brake booster to your existing drum brakes. Was it worth the effort, Is your stopping any better than have manual drums.

Re: Power brakes
One of the best upgrades I've done on my'70. I've got drums all around. Lots of booster options from salvage, new auto parts booster--even fancy (and pretty) cadmium plated ones. Stopping power smooth and I keeps me from having to change my shorts so often!

Re: Power brakes
The stopping won't be better. It's just less effort to push on the pedal.

Re: Power brakes
MC on the left is for a power booster. The MC on the right is for manual brakes. Some aftermarket companies sell the MC with deep hole for both applications. They supply you with a pin to place in the deep hole if you are using it with a power booster. For manual brakes you leave the pin out.
![]() In other words, you can use your old master by making a pin, but you must check the clearance, just as you would for even a direct replacement. ![]() Many times, they use a MC with larger diameter piston when mated to a power booster.

Re: Power brakes
You guys are great, such good advise and diagrams. I'm looking forward to getting started on my '70. I'm 68 years young and this will be my winter project. Keeps me from sitting on my rump. Thanks ALL!
