Help setup my k5 stereo

1972 k5 looking to put in a decent stereo that I will be able to listen too on the highway with the top off without sounding like poo.... I want to use a retro sounds style head unit, not because I am afraid to cut the dash, just want it to not be a theft target. I'm thinking of kick panel speakers for the front and 6x9s in the rear side panel and maybe a thin sub to give it some kick hidden in one of the bed sides. Any buddy have recommendations or thoughts or photos of theirs ?

I'm in the same boat a well. I'm looking into marine audio aux unit and put a few marine speakers in boxes in there. I'm top off all the time.

and still may but I built a few fiberglass subwoofer boxes recently and am thinking about building some fiberglass kick panel pods like this...



For sub duty I would build something that goes on the rear side panels and fires forward.

I have a couple of ported front facing 10" sub boxes that I bought over a decade ago from a guy on CK5 in my storage. They basically replace the side panels and have a magnet cover that goes over the sub. They're super stealthy. If I get a chance I'll try to snap some pics of them this weekend.

I wouldn't even bother with the retro sounds unit. Just install whatever deck you want in the glove box, under the dash or invest in one of those Tuffy consoles with the radio slot. That's what I did.

So in want to do 6 speakers, one in each door, one in each rear panel and 2 in the center dash and maybe a sub in the console . I'm going to use a retro sounds head unit. Any thoughts on an amp for this setup?

If you have flat door panels (71 or earlier) you can put 5 1/4" in them below the door handle. In the back 6 1/2" in the bigger side panel section of the rear panels and a single 12" sub in a sealed 1 cu ft box.

This is my setup in the Jimmy run off a 5 channel amp. 50x4 and 190x1 into 4 ohm but 2 ohm stable if you really want to push it. I covered a 1/4" plywood board (that matches the 1/4" door and side panels I built for my truck) and mounted it to the floor under rear seat. Over the years as i have changed the electronics out, I just attached the new ones to the board with wood screws. This meant just 4 holes in the tub.

This setup works awesome top on or off for me. I cut my dash in '89 for a pullout Alpine CD player (who had a CD in '89!?) Never regretted it and now have a DIN style receiver that works great.
