alternator ground wire advice

i have a 1 wire alternator and want to install a separate ground wire from alternator casing.my question is should i ground to engine block or go directly to negative terminal on battery? thanks for any help.

Isn't the alternator case already grounded in its brackets?

Any car assembly plants still operating in Brampton?

Yes ,i guess it is grounded somewhat through bracket but i was thinking
Between chrome and paint etc it wouldn't be a bad idea to run a seperate ground.maybe i'm thinking too much lol.chrysler brampton is still around,i beleive they make challenger,charger and 300's

In my opinion you can never have too many grounds...I ran grounds from engine block to frame and also ran a ground from back of altenator to frame...I did an engine swap and didn't see any grounds going directly from engine to frame... I was having charging issues and thought it was the grounds but was new voltage regulator contact sticking...But I'm sure everything's grounded now...I would say If your engine is grounded good then your altenator should be good to go without directly grounded the altenator..

Some big alternators, like 140 amp, have a ground lug on the case. I have one in my 61, and the instructions said to run a ground directly to the battery. I didn't do that's since I have a big ground on the engine, and have had no charging issues at all.

You can never have too many good grounds.
I just added a battery to block -block to frame to sheet metal - ground combo from 10 guage wire and my headlights got a lot brighter!!!! Yess!

You can run the neg battery cable right to the lower alternator mount bolt. Works perfect.

Questions like this really irritate me, we have no idea what the rest of your grounds look like, we have no idea what you are using the alternator for beside the standard usage and as mentioned before, the alternator is already grounded through the mount. As far as chrome, I consider it a good ground, it's basically clean metal.

When a person is not sure about an issue on these old trucks, this forum still remains an excellent source for reliable answers and often un-thought-of ideas.

It is especially helpful for 'noobies'; and whether one is a noobie or not, our forum members are mostly delighted to be able to help. I can recall, when working at my dad's service station as just a kid, when a local hang-around guy told me something as I approached a Chrysler product with a jack & a 4-way lug wrench. It went something like "you DO know the left-side wheels on Chrysler product cars have left-handed threads, don't you?". Without his advice on such a 'childish piece of advice', I could've made a worse childish mistake and possibly wrung off a lug stud.

Keep those questions needing answers coming. Never know how much help the answer may offer! Been working on 'em for nearly 70 years and still receive help from this great forum!
