lower ball joint question

Hi guys, I am installing the lower ball joints. Here's a picture attached. The cotter pin hole isn't lined up with the castle nut slots. Did I tighten it too tight? I've been reading not to loosen it to align the cotter pin but this looks wrong to me. (FYI, I don't have a torque wrench)

I'm not sure. I ordered the kit from performance online. They said it was 1973-87 ball joints. I went with their stock height spindles.

I ran into this on my 74 nova clip and ended up getting some taller castle nuts my issue was probably due to the poor brand I got to get it movable however

why get the 73-87 lower ball joints for a 70 unless your working on a different truck?

Or I'm missing something which is highly likely

I'm guessing because the 73-87 ones are easier to replace? or maybe more readily available. it seemed like a good idea at the time lol

hmmmmm thats strange sounds like some of these are in your near future

maybe someone else knows more about that but I cant imagine you would ever want to use the 73-87 lower ball joints on a 63-70

Thanks, the build is slow going no thanks to little road blocks like this. Lol

I can't be the only one who's purchased that kit. I had my eye on it for going on a few years now.

As long as the spindle hole and the balljoint taper are the same,... put a washer under the castle nut.
Its just there to pull the taper tight and to lock it with the cotter pin.
The kit you bought is fine.
Best to replace all those parts anyway.
Most skip the disassemble, clean, and inspect method.

The sad thing is,... there are a bunch of companies telling you,.... you HAVE to switch to 73-87 parts.
Which you dont.
63-70 conversions spindles have been available for at least 10 years now.
Same money.
DIRECT bolt-on.

Actually, the kit shipped with moog parts. Not sure if I got lucky or if thats how they always do it. Either way, I can't complain.

I just last week replaced all 4 balljoints as well. I ordered XRF joints from my local supplier. They were packed with all 1st class fastners, grade 8 bolts, etc. They also came with a thick washer for the bottom joints and everything lined-up perfect. They have a million-mile warr. and are built better (IMO) than Moog.
BTW, mine is a bone-stock '72 with all original front-end parts.
