1960-66 Jack Inst. and parts

As many have been, I'm on a hunt for all the correct parts for the OEM jack that fits under the set in my '60. I have the brackets and ties down points as well as the springs. What I still on the hunt for is the jack and winding tools. There is one on eBay now but I feel its out of my price range (over $300.00).

In taking a close look at the Jack Decal, one thing I've never noticed was that part of the tools is a 'Tire Iron', This is not to be confused with the 'wheel wrench'. (see picture)

I've only seen the Jack, the wheel wrench, the winding tools; I never seen the Tire Iron - Learn something new everyday!

Re: 1960-66 Jack Inst. and parts

I never noticed that tire iron in the picture before either!

I just ran out back and looked under the seat in my 65 for what I had thought was a complete set of jack and parts only to be disappointed to find it not there. I have everything else but that tire iron.

I will have to look and see if I might have one in my all original 66 custom camper...

tire iron must be for split rim trucks, maybe it was only added when the split rim option was used?

I believe this is correct. I have the same iron in my original custom camper with it's original split rim wheels.

I posted a pic of mine awhile back and one member thought it was used to pop the hubcap off, if so would it have been used on all models?

The other end of the wheel wrench is used for popping the hubcaps off.

It's amazing that as long asany of us have been on the different BB's, its as if we learn something fresh every once in a while...... Of course this just gives us something to now have to add to the trucks.....

Re: 1960-66 Jack Inst. and parts

I am curious: on the bottom of JB's instructions it says " equipped with optional equipment only"
Are there more than one set of jack instructions? maybe one set for split rims, and a different set for solid wheels?

That is also a 1959 decal...wondering if anyone can post an original to cross check dates and decal #'s. Looks like this one was used from 60-63.....any idea if there was a change for 64-66?

Jake , looks like that 59 date is correct for your 1960 GMC. Heres one dated 1961 from a very low mile 1962 1/2 ton. I will look in a few more trucks. Im interested in seeing dates and part numbers from 1964-1966.

Re: 1960-66 Jack Inst. and parts

Only revision I can see in the 59 -61 sticker is the asterisk (*) for the tire iron being optioned. Interested to see what the 64-66 trucks had also.

I have some good pics of a NOS tire iron & GM part #....

Re: 1960-66 Jack Inst. and parts

The tire iron actually works quite well. Good for boondock work, now days folks just run to tire store.

The "pointy" end removes hubcaps as suspected or split rim lock ring. You can dent your forehead easy. The wide end used as pry bar to remove tire bead over rim AFTER breaking bead by using jack or vehicle weight. Like bicycle tire change with screwdrivers. I drive Jeep CJ left front tire slowly onto tire to break bead.

2 tire irons work much better, 3 even better.

I've done many Model A tires by hand with Chevy truck tire irons , baby powder and a plastic trash bag helps tire slide on/without scratching rims.

Harbor Freight tools sells cheap modern version 3 foot tire iron.

When I grew up in Alabama i couldn't figure why a truck needed a tar arn.

Reporting the post to the staff would had been much more effective than whining and hoping they saw it. Thankfully after your email accusing us of such double standards, I took the time to search your posts and see what the issue was. Thanks for your help! I was replying to the person I quoted, not your thread. The subject is a good one and the information in replies awesome. I believe impala jim was simply annoyed about a previous issue and taking the wrong path to fix it. Its all good.

Re: 1960-66 Jack Inst. and parts

I just scored a complete original jack set-up today: I left the bracket and springs, since the springs were rusty, jack plates are common, and it just wasnt worth fighting under the nasty seat to unbolt it.

After reading this thread, I was REALLY hoping it'd have the tire iron too, but it didn't. Jack, crank handle, and three lug wrenches.
I don't know which lug wrench is correct though--anybody have some insight on identifying the right one?

Re: 1960-66 Jack Inst. and parts

I have one of the tire irons posted above that has been in my tool box for as long as I can remember. Never knew where it came from. Thanks to the thread it must of come from one of the trucks I have had over the years. I also have a bunch of lug wrenches and don't know what is correct. So looking forward to info on that.
