My Doors Close Now - Here's What Made The Difference

Hello,

I've been working on my 66 C-10 for sometime. I had lots of problems with the doors closing and Ive sought advice on here a few times. So here's what I did to fix mine.

In the beginning, one of my striker plates was adjusted way in and the door would only catch on the first position. I moved the striker plate out (toward the door), which was counter-intuitive, but it helped a lot. Thanks 66-72forum!

Next I bought Honda Civic Coupe weatherstripping. It worked great and I highly recommend it. On the passenger side one of my 3 screws that holds latch in place was gone. When I screwed a third screw in, it pulled the latch out more than I ever thought that it could and allowed it to meet the striker plate properly. A little striker plate adjustment and the door closes very easily. One down......

Nothing seemed to work on the drivers door. Closing it from inside the truck was especially difficult. No matter what, it just wanted a solid push to catch properly. I started examining the door parts closely. First I noticed that the door control (some call it a remote control) had a small piece missing just above where the inside door handle connects. I could see this only with my door panel off but I felt slop in my handle before. This small piece was formed from flat metal and it was meant to keep play out of the door handle mechanism.

I was sure this was my problem but I kept looking. I found that there was also play in the actual door latch. The gear wheel that catches the striker plate was sloppy. It was not properly connected with the circular piece of metal that sits behind it. I realized that it was incorrect by comparing the passenger side latch to the drivers side.

I decided to order the latch $56 and the door control $21 from classicparts.com. Installation took 5 minutes and the difference is amazing!!! Reproduction parts can be questionable but these two parts fit perfectly and my door closes and opens easily.

I wasn't an old car guy before this truck and my doors were hard to close so I wondered if that was just part of an old truck.

Now both of my doors close easily on the the first try. I don't have to slam them at all. I can give my door a push and let go of it before it meets the striker and it will close. I used to have to give the door a solid push into the striker plate.

So, you might inspect your latch and door control if your door wont close easily. I fixed my headache for $76!

I debated on the Honda Civic Coupe weatherstripping because of cost. It's around $100, but I think its worth it. It fits perfectly and my doors close perfectly! Thanks OP on the FAQ.

Good to know! Glad you got it sorted. I fought with a door on a 65 galaxie 500 years ago... I eventually sold it having never got it properly sorted, so I know the frustration. lol.

Great info and thanks for posting! My doors have given me fits since the day I got the truck. I have to slam the doors all the time. Its gotten to the point that my kids slam the doors on my commuter, the Wife's Yukon and every other car bc they are used to doing it in the truck. I think Im gonna tackle this project next. Hearing success stories from other people here just gives me a little more motivation!

I would sure start by checking the latch to see if there might be play in the wheel. I didn't look at it long, but the new latch seemed to be an improved design. The wheel and the circle piece behind it,that I spoke of, are now made from one piece of metal.

There was such improvement in my drivers door that I may buy a new latch for my passengers side. It works great but I notice that the wheel takes more effort to turn than the new one. It makes me wonder if the passenger side could be even better.

My doors were the worst. There is hope for anyone if mine can be fixed!

64-66 doors close much better than 60-63. my 61 and the 62 i owned years ago remind me of the 57 and 58 i had. my Bro in law years ago when i had the 62 bought a beater 64-66 and you could almost blow the doors shut, they closed that easy.

Is this true or do some members have 60-63 doors that close easily?

I spent days on my 62 panel trying to get the doors to close correctly, passenger side is perfect. Never did get the drivers side to close the same way, for me the drivers side had a big dent in it near the window maybe bent the whole door slightly out of whack. I think as with all of these trucks, perfect cab perfect door alignment, hinges, body mounts, etc, lots of variables. I think it can be done just takes time.

Im pretty sure it fits 2006-2011 Civic coupe.

I found a recommendation for majestic honda, somewhere. I paid just under $100 shipped and it arrived in 2 days. That was the cheapest I could find. I a few junk yards with no luck. I also tried ebay for a while, but they were no cheaper than new.

I really can't say enough about how well it fits. I was amazed when I snapped it in place! It looks great and it works much better than my old glue on. The size is perfect!

my doors close pretty good with the Honda w/s. still have to be a firm push when closing. aren't the 64-66 latch mechanisms different than 60-66?
