Bottom of hood originality question

I'm working on a "new" hood and ready to take care of the bottom side. I'm wondering what type of paint it had?

This hood looked like it was black, but it has runs so I question rattle can?
Looking thru previous post on the thread that said original paint only. I see one that was fully color painted, one that was edge painted.

So does it depend on year, plant it came from? black, color coded?

Re: Bottom of hood originality question

My restoration shop did mine in black. They didn't do overspray and all of that, but to my knowledge (and from the appearance of my unmolested original before we restored it) I believe black is correct, and that's what they determined as well.

It could vary from plant to plant, of course, or year to year. But for '70 anyway that's what mine was and is.

There was a survivor (plain jane, but ultra low miles) on here a year or so ago and there were a number of unfinished (uncoated, unpainted) parts which surprised me. Wish I remember what the underside of the hood was on that!

Black. Mine is/was satin black. It may have even been black primer from the factory.

That's what I meant above - that's what I believe to be correct (black with overspray, hood likely a bit open when painting?) but we didn't do the overspray - which should be there for a truly correct look.

No factory paint truck I've ever seen is body color. Unless that's a typo, it's contrary to what the conventional wisdom seems to be...

Re: Bottom of hood originality question

I have several low mile original paint trucks, and the underside of the hoods are black with color overspray on the edges. Some have very little body color overspray, and some have quite a bit.

Probably depends on when the hood was painted before or after a liquid lunch. I worked for the GMAD in Van Nuys for awhile, and the two bars across the street did a booming business. Probably the same at every other factory.

Re: Bottom of hood originality question

I can guarantee my truck wears the original paint so maybe it depends on where it was built.

Re: Bottom of hood originality question

All of my trucks were flat black with small amount of body colour over spry around the edges. When I repaint them they go body colour underneath
