Another question lol thanks for any help guys
Im in the process of some major motor work done to my 70 c10 long bed with 350/TH400, and after watching some videos and reading a little, I've given some serious thought to a gear drive instead of a timing belt/chain. anyone use this set-up and are they good for the average mild build 350? any drawbacks or plus sides to having a gear drive? Obviously I'm not producing enough power to skip a gear tooth with my timing chain, but boy does a gear drive sound awesome. keep in mind this truck is only brought out when I get a hankering for some full throttle fun, then she's parked again

Everyone has an opinion on gear drives. They trip Knock Sensors (probably don't have to worry about that), Create Harmonic Vibration, and there's other cons. I've never, or have known anyone, That has ever had a problem, racing or DD, with a gear drive. I say if your on the fence, go for it.

It's money best served elsewhere. A double roller chain is just fine, and less noisy.

The only awesome gear whine sound comes from a blower.
Save your cash... the gear drive just ain't worth it. I have built some snotty small blocks in my time and the tried and true Cloyes double roller timing sets for under 50 bucks work just fine. Gary

I was kind looking for the whine. I also thought about those 2399.99 dollar under hood roots style blower, just don't wanna ruin my bottom end.....low psi? maybe?

You'd be dimes ahead just installing a speaker and have the whine and pitch tied to RPMs of the engine. I believe there are those doing this on their whimpy electric cars just to feel like they're driving something manly.

Re: Another question lol thanks for any help guys
If longitivity is of concern Gear Drives wear out ALOT quicker... I thought about going that way until I spoke With Allan Patterson from Patterson Racing with is a PREMERE small block Chevy engine builder and he said that if you are planning to do teardowns frequently like they do on Racecars then it is more precise than timing Chains BUT for the everyday driver he highly discourages Gear Drives...

Re: Another question lol thanks for any help guys
I would never do it , bought a truck with one , it was the first thing I took off , replaced with a dual roller chain , and I was happy again

I did one years ago on a car I built. Loved the sound. Cheap way to turn a few heads at a stop light or when you pull in some place.
Up to you. YOur car.
