jumps and hops going into reverse
My 67, 6 cyl, manual, C30 hops and jumps when releasing the clutch in reverse. as in - it is never smooth starting in reverse.
It has been doing that as long as I can remember, even after a full clutch job and some work in the tranny. Are we loooking at the nature of beast? |

I remember a post about this not too long ago, too bad i can't remember what it said Wheel hop maybe? I beleive I remember something about the rear-end moves a touch when you go backward and it does something... (bad memory)

Mine does it and yes, coils. Thats what it was, but I still dont remember the solution

clutch
A new clutch will do wonders. Even with coil springs.

Thanks for all the "get backs"
I did put a new clutch and all the other stuff not long ago (at least as far as mileage) If the clutch did take a slight warp, I would think I would feel something in forward gears? Which I don't ....... make sense? It’s not a showstopper but ever try to parallel park a 9 foot bed with the thing hopping and jumping and no power steering (I know, stop whining!!) I feel like I’m about to take out one guy’s left rear corner panel, the other guy’s front bumper and any nearby parking meters while my head is bouncing back and forth off the windshield (not that bad!! but ....) hahaha |

I would say you have two problems at work here. First your clutch is not as smooth as it should be...did you have the flywheel surfaced when you replaced the clutch? Did you replace the pilot bearing?...makes a huge difference. Second you have some slack in your driveline. Motor mounts,transmission mounts,u-joints, even slack in the ring and pinion...when you put in reverce all this slack is taken up because every thing gets moved in the opposite direction. Fix the clutch first.

My '69 used to do that so bad the hood would vibrate in synch with it so loud it would wake the dead. I replaced the rear motor mounts & it's much better now.

Thanks guys - all good advice:
I have to add, the thing does sit for long periods (I know I should get it out more) so I think the flywheel & pressure plate may build up surface rust. I should drive it hard for a week or so. When I get back under there, I'll give all the good things above a look. The one thing I love about this truck, it is so easy to work on. |

Give the motor mounts a real good looking at.
With the hood open and the parking brake on (and no one in the way) Put the truck in reverse and look at the engine as you ease the clutch out. If the engine looks like it is about to pop out and land in the driveway, then you are in need of new mounts. The fact that your truck doesn't do the jumping act in first gear tells me that the clutch adnd flywheel are fine. |
