Standalone Emergency flashers

Guys, I'm slowly getting Hotdog updated on a couple of fronts, but Im stuck at something that I've not been able to find a clear answer for.

I know some people have used the aftermarket turn signal/hazzard combo switch that clamps onto the steering column, and also some of you have managed to get a hold of a flarestat kit.


The problem I have, is that I'm kind of broke, but very resourceful.

I have a harness that came out of my 96 S10 blazer, and I have lots of wiring, a fuse panel, and most importantly, a few flashers.

The question is this. Can anyone provide me with a schematic on how a flasher system works? I know I should be able to add a simple toggle switch for my dash that allows me to essentially make my own system.


Can anyone help? I'll do a detailed write up after the fact...

One on/off switch, two relays, and a no load flasher.. switch to no load flasher providing 12v +, then other end of no load flasher to the two relays 86, then 85 on relay to ground, then 12v + to 87 on relays, then turn signal switch side to 87 a on relay (make one relay left and one right).. last park lamp side to 30 on relay (again keep same left and right as used in prior step).

I got a chance to flesh out a basic diagram, but can't really understand the power to lights portion of what you mean.



Care to elaborate from here?

NVS, so then will this force me to have the lights off while I run the hazzards? What will happen if I run both at the same time?

The relay wired as I posted protects both circuits and nothing will happen if you have the parking light on or off with this hazard function on or off.. the only thing is, if you have the parking lights on and turn this hazard on you will not see the flashing; it will be steady on, since the parking lights are on.

I have not done it yet but worked out the scheme and bought the relay.
The idea is to use a 4 pole double throw relay. Power to the primary set of output poles comes thru the turnsignal switch. Power for the secondary (hazard circuit) is provided thru another flasher which has it's own 12V source. A simple switch throws the relay to actuate the hazard flashing. You have to split the 4 output wires for each signal light where they come out of the signal switch loom at the steering column to have the separated circuitry.

The diagram shows the relay in it's "resting" position.
The 4 signal wires out of the TS switch go to #'s 1,2,3,4 and out from #'s9,10,11,12 to each corner bulb. The hazard flasher is wired to #'s 5,6,7,8 which are jumpered together. A switch puts power to #13 to energize the relay. #14 is grounded. You could run a wire from the 5678 gang to an indicator light I guess.
Should work....I think....I'm pretty sure.

I got this one but it will likely prove too light at only 5A rating. That and 3A is all they offer in 12V.

I had to move my `63 to my new home recently along with a bunch of belongings. Over 600 miles on interstates pulling a loaded trailer I wanted some kind of hazard flashing function. I rigged up a quick solution by jumping between the L&R rear signal wires at the plug in the firewall under the dash thru a toggle switch. Flip the switch and turn on the left signal gave me 3-way flasher (L front and both rear). Better than nothing but I had to keep careful track so I wouldn't be hazardin when I just wanted to be signalin.

I think your 5A contacts should be okay as long you aren't driving more than one bulb per corner. A standard 1157 bulb runs about 28 watts or ~2 amps at 14 volts on the brighter filament used for the brake and turn signal.

It's a clever idea.

The more I think about it, I like the idea jtrichard talked about with using 2 separate DPDT relays (avail. in higher amps) to divide front/rear. The single 4PDT I could only find in 12V 5A. In the hazard mode all 4 bulbs would fire at once loading pretty heavy. Going retro-fit LED bulbs might fix that.
Plus, using 2) DPDT is a better option as it leaves you with one end functioning if one of the relays craps out. The relay link I last posted has sockets available too, solder lugs or screw terminal.

Your 3way got me thinking you could use this http://www.ebay.com/itm/221970211687...84.m1436.l2649 and wire the right front and rear to it with a toggle and flasher and turn it on and left turn OR use two of them and have FULL front and rear hazards with a 30AMP relay

Nothing yet cap. Ive been sourcing parts and working overtime hours.

This is how I wired mine except I keep the stock turn signal switch. On my 66 I used the turn signal wires not the park/ running lights. For the front lights I used the light blue and dark blue wires, the rear lights are the Yellow and dark green wire.

The single pole dual throw switch was to replace the stock turn signal switch. If yours works I would use that instead of using the second switch. Sorry if I added to the confusion.
