I have a 71 c20 with some awesome patina but the hood was robbed years ago to be dipped and used on a restoration project because it was so straight. The truck now has a primer hood and i would like to some how recreate the patina it had or get it close. Something better than primer is all i want. Ideas?

Maybe some single stage paint and scotchbrite pads then buff it out that would thin and age the look. I'm sure there is a how to on the YouTube thing on how to do it. The best way to fix it would be 3 coats of color and 4 coats of clear but I do own a body shop and can't get into the "patina" [IE:don't want to paint ] look. I know they are original only once and all that jazz but at some point they stop being a patina look and just start looking rusty. I'm not picking on you or your truck or how you like them, I just want to state for the record that patina thing may have gone too far [in my opinion] Address withheld to avoid haters.

That truck looks like it's screaming ,PLEASE PAINT ME ! Patina is just a fad . Once painted it will get 5 more mpg and 15 mph top speed !

Guys I understand the whole patina thing is just a fad but paint is out of my budget. My grandpa gave me this truck and I'm just trying to improve the looks of it for now. Someday I might have the money to paint it but thought you guys might have some ideas of how to get my hood to look like it did. Not asking for your opinion on whether I should paint it or not or if patina is cool.

Do what hugger said, single stage it, then sand it down to bare metal where you want it patina'd. Then spray some vinegar on it, causes it to flash rust . Should match well. Then clear over the newly rusted hood. Probably a dull clear so it's not to shiny .

I can vouch for this technique. I also sprinkle a little salt on the wet vinegar. You can see it start to flash rust quickly, once it gets to where you think it matches well, then rinse it off real good with some gentle water flow and let it dry. If it needs more, just repeat.

The upper sides of both fenders are pure rust with badically no paint..you could just sand down the hood and let mother nature match it for you.

When you "sand" the paint maybe use some thing to use to beat the paint like maybe a hand cleaner with pumice.
The thing to do is you need to do some spray out panels maybe an old hood or something large enough you can divide into sections and try different methods like the ones laid out before you above. that way you can see witch ones work best for your application. I do have a semi gloss clear coat from PPG and you can add regular clear to it to change the gloss level from nearly flat to semi gloss. A lot of people don't understand the differences in flat to low gloss and semi and whatever. I don't know that i do and everyone has a different idea of what level is what. Good luck on your attempt, I hope you achieve the look your wanting.
