Nice day for a drive!

Even though it ended on a flatbed (transmission) I managed to get it out for a lunch with the wife and a nice inaugural drive.

Now I just need a 4L80E and a controller, and the 200-4R can sit next to the original TH400 in Transmission Jail.

I'd stop for that truck on the side of the road. That stinks about the 200-4R as that's what I'm hoping to put in mine this weekend. It's got one bolted in and for some reason it came with a spare in the front seat; should that have been a sign?

Any idea why the 200r crapped out? I am wanting to go with a 700R4 in my truck and a couple buds are telling me the 200R is better, and then I see your post.

I think he said in another thread he believes the builder set it up wrong (TV cable), which will burn one up pretty quick.

I used all BTO stuff (TV made EZ and electronic brake TC unlock switch) and mine was an autozone reman that's been in the truck since 2006 and probably at least 40-45K miles. I set mine up per BTO specs and checked the shift pressures with a gauge. So far so good. Mine was a late 80's 700R.

I put a 2004r in the '69 Suburban. The first one was a freebe and the guy said he didn't know anything about it. It didn't work from the git-go. The second one was from a salvage yard car and it worked great. I used the BowTie Overdrives components with no problems. I also checked all pressures as recommended by BowTie Overdrives.... It was still working good when I sold it. I had put 2500 miles on it at that time.

This actual trans ran 12s in my 2+2 behind a 500+hp big block pulling 4400lbs of weight, so the trans was actually pretty stout and never gave me an issue. It's a Buick Grand National unit built with a lot of upgraded parts. When I made that decision 15 or so years ago, the wisdom was that 700s are stronger than 200s stock, but you can build a 200 stronger than you can build a 700, at least for similar costs.

But it was going into my new project, so I had it rebuilt.

I don't know if something went wrong, but the TV adjustment seems right still, so far as I can tell. The trans builder said you don't normally lose forward and reverse at the same time if you've burned up clutches due to low pressure, so he thinks it's either the converter (which I replaced to lower the stall speed to stock, so it's possible its bad) or the front pump.

It works when cold, if that helps!

That is one handsome truck. I was going to say those 200rs are in Grand Nationals and can be built to take whatever is thrown at them. But I see you knew that. An old transmission wiz who used to do mine always replaced the torque converter. If you refused one, no warranty. He said since bad torque converters kill transmissions and you can't tell is they are good by looking, you're pissing into the wind using the old converter. Plus all the crap will be in there. Same goes for coolers. It very well could be that new converter was a bum unit

Could well be the converter, though I still am not sure why it'd be better when cold.
