59 GMC Toterhome
Thought this might create some interest on here! My friend is building this
unit right now. The cab and chassis are done, truck runs and drives. He is well on the way with the rear motorhome/car hauler unit. Truck has a 5.9 Cummins and is built on a freightliner school bus chassis. It is a looong truck and will get a lot of looks wherever it goes!! I took a pic of his artist's concept drawing but the truck will look almost exactly like this |

Re: 59 GMC Toterhome
That is going to be slick. He may have trouble with that much rear overhang being that low though. It wouldn't be able to make it in my driveway or back out with the incline out by the highway.

Re: 59 GMC Toterhome
Yes this truck is long! it is on air ride all around but some driveways could be a problem for sure. The guy building it is a very experienced and talented builder, he has thought of all the pro's and con's. He does not use computers at all so I asked him if he minded me sharing the picture. The pic is of the actual truck, the cab is already painted but the rear box was colored by an artist. I will try to post updated pics from time to time

Re: 59 GMC Toterhome
ever see motorhomes with little wheels mounted under the rear bumper?
A buddy of mine who is a good fabber is currently building a frame/chassis for a guy. Stretched a 127" wheelbase to 159 or so. It's for some kind of hearse or flower car project. The original frame is like an 89 long bed. Whatta PITA to move around. |

Re: 59 GMC Toterhome
so cool!!!!!
man i keep dreaming of building something similar, but limit it to 25' or 35' so it can make it through mountain passes in Colorado in the summertime, and and fit in small camp sites. usually that prompts a "you're insane" look from my wife...

Re: 59 GMC Toterhome
very cool truck. can i assume that all the detail and trim is airbrushed on?
as for the overhang? many car trailers are lower and have an equal overhang we had rubber wheels on the back of our 2 car enclosed trailer, after dragging the rubber off on a corner they are now steel rollers

On a trailer the wheels that are providing the motivation are on the vehicle that is pulling it, so some drag won't stop it. With the rear overhang and ground clearance this thing has, if he puts caster type wheels at the very rear, his driving wheels are going to be suspended in air at even a slight dip. Not to belabor the point. The builder obviously knows what he is doing to have gotten it this far. |

Re: 59 GMC Toterhome
Those roller wheels on the tail end of a travel trailer with long overhang will roll it right along. But, on the back of a truck the rear wheels need to stay in contact with the road or you ain't goin' nowhere.

Re: 59 GMC Toterhome
The bad of that much overhang is that you might be pretty limited as to what you can haul if he plans on having a garage in the back to haul a car. The commercial ones are usually only good for bikes and atvs.
About 30 years ago there was a guy in the PNW with fenderless roadster that he hauled in the back of a front engine school bus that had the back end cut open to drive the car in. The front half was somewhat of a camper/party wagon. Ugly but he used it for a number of years.

Re: 59 GMC Toterhome
Considering the builder lives in a fairly flat and open part of Canada, I don't think they'll have too many issues driving it being that length. Now come to BC and drive it and it'll get stuck everywhere.
