64 -66 stock C10 15" rims/ cap photo id help
Is there a thread, site, book, with photo help sorting stock factory 1964-66 C10 15" wheels and proper hub caps?
Some rims have 3 clips, others 3 bumps. Some stamped GM and NT, heard of KH marks and 2 digit year 64 marks. Some wheels riveted, some welded. What years? Just want set of 5 that match, set of 3 for trailer, and 7 1964 clean hubcaps. How do you tell rims apart?? I'm bringing home 2-3 per week, but not certain which are correct. Thanks, Fredthecat Last edited by Fredthecat; 02-22-2016 at 04:06 AM. |

Re: 64 -66 stock C10 15" rims/ cap photo id help
1962 1963 and 1964 rims are basically the same. All three will have the larger valve stem hole and 3 nubs but later in the 1964 run the smaller valve stem was started. 65 66 were the smaller valve stem. If you look between the beads , theres a stamping and a very small date. All you'll see is a 63 or 64 depending on what year the rim is and the width of the rim like 15x5 or 15x5 1/2. All of this depends on how exact you want to get for correctness or if your just going for a "Look" . Hubcaps are 1964 and 1965 only , 1966 was slightly different. They have a poor reproduction of the 1966 hubcap but thats it.
This is a late 64 rim.

That would be a handy thread to start. Seeing and reading codes would be helpful as well as a visual on the differences in styles and production. If creating such a thread was to evolve, consideration into the different sizes should be considered as well. There were tube and tubeless wheels in those years. I never considered scanning the tube type wheels as I imagined no one would be interested.

It would be REAL nice if we could start new threads in The Factory Correct Restoration thread. Moderators ?

Why can't you? That thread is not locked from what I see. You can't start a sub thread in it as it's not a individual forum but nothing should be stopping you from adding to the posts in that one.

Sub thread is what I mean then. Its my feeling, and a few others , that it would be nice to have a separate section for this information. Its very hard to stay on topic in one single thread or to relate to a specific subject when only one thread is available. Theres a lot of information lost here.

Re: 64 -66 stock C10 15" rims/ cap photo id help
A proper Hubcap/wheel ID thread would easily be the most often read info thread on this site. Mass confusion still exists on the hubcaps alone, and they are pretty simple compared to wheels options.
Whatever needs to be created or modified to provide the best place for this topic will pay off big time. With members like aerotruk63, 60-66, and Factorystock adding images and their knowledge, we'll be swimming in good info. |

Re: 64 -66 stock C10 15" rims/ cap photo id help
Then here are the three different designs of each year.
1) Nub style on the left, 2) 1/2 ton 6 lug Clip style center. 3) 3/4 ton 8 lug wheel to the right.

Re: 64 -66 stock C10 15" rims/ cap photo id help
The image there is deceiving. Contrary to how it appears, these caps are all the same outside diameter. The different inner rings make for optical illusions and it appears the GMC nub cap on the left might be sitting up a little higher too.

Re: 64 -66 stock C10 15" rims/ cap photo id help
Sorry for the lacking pictures Bruce but its what I had quickly available. The main thing to take from this visual is the ring sizes. Once you focus on that they become very easy to recognize. I have all my NOS hubcaps sorted now and I can do a thread on each year Chevy and GMC with pictures including the G series hubcap. Rims are going to be very time consuming just in 15 inch alone !

Re: 64 -66 stock C10 15" rims/ cap photo id help
The NT stamp is Norris Technologies and the KH is Kelsey Hayes , there was also a C for Chevrolet Warren but I have not seen this rim. All three are wheel manufacturers.

Is there not yet another cap for the G series Van that is thinner, also smaller in diameter?

Re: 64 -66 stock C10 15" rims/ cap photo id help
Yes but it only fits 13 inch rims. G series trucks also used 14 inch rims and used our half ton nub hubcaps.

Re: 64 -66 stock C10 15" rims/ cap photo id help
Would not a Restoration page that was an INDEX to specific subjects work?
If you started with a main THREAD that was a basic index, then that page LINKED you to a secondary THREAD. What I mean by that is as an example: Your looking for wheel information: The Restoration thread would show you an INDEX listing the overall sections available to you. You would then click on the link to WHEELS. In WHEELS you can again INDEX and create LINKS to: Application Options Finishes then add sections as they arise that would link you closer to the subject your interested in. GM had this all figured out before the internet and it works well. By referring to the sections GM had already laid out it makes it easier for us book guys to look up info faster. Is it possible to rename a link so it will simply state the subject matter instead of the address to the page that is sought out? While the 67-72chevytrucks.com search option is handy, you can become overwhelmed with the variety of links it provides. Is it possible to create a private member group that would allow a group of interested members to edit the Index page as required?

Re: 64 -66 stock C10 15" rims/ cap photo id help
I was wondering if there are any full cover hubcaps not center only that will fit the 1964-6 lug rim. I'm curious because I have not seen anyone running anything else but the center cap.
With rim choices being so limited with the 6 lug it seems someone should have looked to alternative look. Maybe it's just me but I like to look for different setups. -Mark |
