What Kind of Springs are These?
They are rear coil springs, but they look to have a progressive rate by the look of the varying coil spacing.
So, are they supposed to give a softer ride, but still handle heavier loads?

They look like they are wound progressively, but all of the progressive springs I have seen are wound tight in the center and loose on both ends... Sorry I can't be much help, but it is definitely a progressive rated spring, I just can't expound any further.
