V-belt vs Serpentine belt
I'm starting to put together a 350 to drop in my truck to replace the 327 that's in it.
question is I'd like to go with a serpentine setup besides that brackets which I can get off a 350 in the junk yard is there any other reason this won't work. Also can I remove the water pump fan and radiator shroud and just install a electric fan? Last edited by ufbugman; 03-09-2016 at 11:48 PM. |

Re: V-belt vs Serpentine belt
Removing the shroud will diminish your cooling systems efficiency, I would avoid doing that.

Re: V-belt vs Serpentine belt
make sure to change the fan and water pump they turn backwards from what you have now and you will be chasing overheat conditions if you don't. Jim

Re: V-belt vs Serpentine belt
Yes, you can use 305, 350, and 4.3 Serpentine bracket setups from trucks, vans, Astros, Blazers, S10s, Camaros, etc. As noted you must use the water pump application for the engine you got it from as they do turn backwards. Some have a bolt-on fan I believe and some have a fan that threads on.
If you want to use electric fans that is fine. Be sure it/they have enough capacity to cool your engine. There are many threads on electric fans. If you go that route you will probably have to get a bigger alternator. Finally, most of the serpentine setups use a CS130 alternator. They are unreliable. I would take the time to upgrade to a CS144 which is much more robust and uses the same connection as a CS130.

This is what I went with. No problems with it so far. I did end up changing to an aluminum radiator with electric fans, but it worked well with the mechanical fan. My radiator was old and needed replaced, so I upgraded to the aluminum one. |

That's one nice looking Engine...
The one I'm getting is just a GM crate engine, and going with Edlebrock intake. |
