Can't get into 4Lo NP203
Ok the subject line says it all. I built me a 83 1/2 ton 4x4 and i can't get my transfer case into 4 Lo. It is a NP203 with a TH350 infront of it. I can get 4 Hi,2Hi,N,2Lo but not into 4 Lo which sucks because I plan on USING this truck and Low range is a must. Is this a problem with the TC or ME? LOL I have tried several times to no avail. The pattern is like this:
Dash 4Lo 2Lo N 2Hi 4Hi Any advice is much appreciated, thanks. Stano

The problem is most likely in the 203's shifter "box", the part that the shift lever comes out of. They are notorious junk, & usually not worth your time to try & fix. They are pretty much like a 3-spd column shifter, cleaning, oiling & adjusting might help- but only for a little while. GM discontinued new assemblies & parts years ago, & I don't think the aftermarket makes anything either. There are companies that make "twin stick" conversions.

Thanks Jeffspower. The action is nice and smooth actually and not sloppy. It works well otherwise just stops at 2 Lo. Like 4Lo isn't there at all. The transfer is a 79 model if that is of any help. I will mess with it and see what I can get it to do. Thanks

You might unhook the rods from the t-case levers (the two that are on a shaft sticking out of the t-case) & move them thru their positions to see if they are all there. One lever will have 3 positions, high, neutral, low- & the other will have 2 positions, 2wd & 4wd. You have to pry on them a little to get them thru their detents, wheels blocked & trans in neutral will help. Rocking the rear driveshaft will help too.
If you get all positions this way, then you know its in that dam POS box. |
