Valve cover install issue - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I ran into a problem when putting on new valve covers today. The new ones hit the part that is circled in yellow. What is this part? It is bolted to the manifold. Can I move it? If not is there a smaller one? My old valve covers are pictured and they clear it ok.

That is your EGR valve.

That is the EGR valve. If your state requires a visual emissions check for your year, meaning that they have to be able to see everything that is supposed to be there, then it must be there. If not, trash can it. You can get EGR block off plates from the aftermarket or make one yourself using the gasket as a template. Make it out of .250 steel plate. Make sure you block off the vacuum line too.

You will never miss the EGR except your engine may smooth out and run better without it.

I had egr problems with my S10 all the time. I didn't realize they even existed back when this truck was made.

They didn't exist back in the early '70's. Your intake is a newer one, check on the back for a production date. Anything with a E.G.R. is late '70's and beyond.
