Fixing 4 wheel drive on 89
I am looking at an 89 chevy 1500 4x4 and was told it has a broken front axle. Was told the part will cost $106. How hard will it be to fix this? The truck is still driveable just doesn't engage in to 4x4. I'm very mechanically inclined and do all my own work on my cars but wanna know what i'm getting into before i start so i also make sure to have everything i may need.
I have seen a 4x4 truck and its working just never tore into one but i can't see it being to difficult. On a scale of 1 to 10 10 being hardest what is this rated and what kind of job would be similair to it, like would pulling an engine be the same or harder or something like that. Thnaks in advance for any help or ideas you can shed on the subject. |

I'm not sure really, the truck is at a car dealer and the guy told me it had a broken front axle it was priced at like $106 for the peice that is broke. And this peice allows it to not go into 4x4 i guess.
Sorry i guess i can't really offer any more information till i go look at the truck tomorrow. I figure it can't been to hard as i have done alot of car stuff like engine swaps, tearing down rearends in cars and so forth, i guess when i figure out the exact problem and i need help i will ask unless someone may have an idea of what is wrong with it. |

Sounds like Bullshat to me if thats all it was gonna cost they would fix it and get more money from it.
But if the part only costs 106 it's probably the little "sensor engagement thingy" ( couldn't think of the name of that part if my a$$ was on fire right now) that the electrical wires hook up to on the differential case.

Offer the crooked bastard 106 bucks more and tell him to fix it. I agree with the bull**** declaration.
Go look somewhere else. This dealer is yanking your chain.

thats what the wonderful world of IFS will get you. try for something with a solid front axle that won't break if you look at it the wrong way. and yeah, $106 for an IFS piece? haha. I'd say no thanks.

The actual driver side front axle is broke and not there anymore. So i need a new axle the part that goes from center peice to tire. If no one knows what i mean i can get pictures.
How much am i looking at to fix this? I will be doing work myself so price just parts. |

I'm located in Wapello, Iowa.
I may have a lead on the parts i need. If not i will let ya know and hopefully you have them. I not only need the axle i need any joints that connect the axle to the center section and then to the wheel. Let me know though if you have them and how much you want for it. If you want you can e-mail me directly at mach158@hotmail.com |

My 2 cents
Well if your gonna buy it broke then go ahead and get NEW parts to fix it with . The axle should come complete from differential flange all the way to splined outer shaft. I'ts not that big of a job but it's a pain in the arse to have to do it twice because of cheap parts. Jeff
