6 bolt wheels on 72 2 whl Dr

looking at purchasing a 72 2 whl Dr SWB , all numbers match but it has 4 wheel drums & 6 bolt wheels . To the best of my knowledge this went away in 70? It also has leaf rear suspension which must be rare but it's listed on options . Anyone know what year leafs were available in this model ? Maybe cab was swapped onto earlier frame but what are the chances that would have leaf springs too ?

More likely it was a 4x4 before they gelded it.

Define "all numbers match".

Vin decodes to 2 wheel Dr SWB & it has low hump trans cover . It's quite a ways away so have not had opportunity to check # on frame .

Re: 6 bolt wheels on 72 2 whl Dr

You need to check the both frame vins against the title and cab. I had a guy try to sell me a 72 and he swore it was original. Once I started showing him how it was not, then the real story came out. I have "never" seen a 72 with 4 wheel drums from the factory. Never met anyone who reverse engineered a disk system to drums because they loved drums...I could be wrong, but something doesn't sound right. I would be very cautious about buying that truck.

You could get leafs or coils on both Chevy's and GMC's. Most Chevy's came with coils as most GMC's came with leafs. I did have a GMC Burb with coils and it was listed on the SPID.

70 was the last year for 6 bolt wheels on 2wd half ton trucks. If anyone knows anything different, please educate us.....

That is correct, the second VIN is on top of the driver side rail near the back of the cab. Could be closer to the seat location.

Re: 6 bolt wheels on 72 2 whl Dr

The VIN on the frame only has half of the numbers stamped in it if you have never seen it. The first few digits are not stamped, but most of the middle to the end of the VIN is there. You should be able to match it up if it is legit.

Verified that serial # on frame matches so either this is one oddball truck or someone actually converted it from 5 stud disc to 6 stud drum ! Who would do that ??

You should give us a pic or a link to it.
Might be something obvious to see.

The frame VIN will be the last eight digits, year, plant and six for sequence.

Is this a Chevy or GMC? Oshawa (1) assembly or someplace else. Is the SPID optioned for overseas export?

For some reason I read this as a 2wd blazer.
My mistake.
Please post pics when you get a chance,...

Chevy , built in Fremont & spid says " Calif vehicle reg." The spid / door tag & frame #,s match . To the best of my knowledge all blazer 2 wdr were coil spring & also changed in 71 to 5 stud / disc . I had a 72 2 wdr. that I did body off resto on .

Re: 6 bolt wheels on 72 2 whl Dr

I'm not up on 2wd parts interchange because I'm a 4x4 guy. Is it possible somebody with a pre 71 1/2 ton robbed the coveted 5 lug parts from this truck, then replaced them with the 6 lug parts from an older truck?

Re: 6 bolt wheels on 72 2 whl Dr

You know years ago these trucks were bought and sold in all shapes and states of disrepair. Most common being the motor and trans were missing, but someone could have robbed the 5 lug stuff off of it or possibly had two trucks and built his favorite and put the leftover parts on one to sell. I'm sure I'm not the only one that has had leftover stuff find its way onto a truck that ended up being a bargin for someone cause it was mostly leftover parts but still made a pretty decent truck. It is just things like 4 wheel drums could and quite possibly did end up on trucks made after 70 using this method

Re: 6 bolt wheels on 72 2 whl Dr

Yes guys that about what I summed it up to as well , I didn't think the frame # was going to be a match at 1st . Thought someone swapped cab onto a pre 71 frame but that's not the case . This is a great site , tons of info .
