Thinking about getting an 88 Suburban

I'm thinking about getting an 88 GMC Suburban as a camping/tow rig. The one I'm looking at is a 3/4 ton with a 350 and 145K miles.

What should I look for as far as typical issues with these rigs?

Re: Thinking about getting an 88 Suburban

I'd check the rear wheel wells for rust at the split seam right in the center of the well, road splash gets blown up into it and it'll rust along the spot welds. Also look for rust penetration at the front of the wheel well where it meets the rear seating / foot well. There is an L-shape brace that can get ugly rust behind it. You end up pulling that bracket to fix the rust underneath.

That's about the only non-standard problem I found on my 87. The rest is anything you'd look for on an older square body truck. Maintenance records, leaks, radiator rot, fluid check, suspension, steering, braking, how it runs/any smoke, drivelines, damage on the oil pan, trans pan/ bottom of t-case, oddball tire wear, appearance of leaks on the inner pillars, body damage - unusual welding, etc. If you take your time and crawl under it with a flashlight you can usually catch signs of abuse or neglect. If the fuel tank is dented it's possible the TBI pick-up baffle has popped loose from the floor of the tank.
