Replace steering box seals
I have an 89 c60 that has a Saginaw 710 power steering box. The input shaft seals are leaking. I have a factory shop manual and it has instructions for how to replace the seal for the pitman arm but nothing for the input shaft. It looks like a seal kit is available but I've never worked on a steering box before and I don't know if it is something that I can do myself. Does anyone out there have any experience with this or a manual with instructions?

Re: Replace steering box seals
It's not a tough job, the main thing you need to pay attention to is the position of the bearing lock and adjustment nuts. You need to count the number of turns it takes to remove both of them. I use a hammer and chisel to stake a mark on the box housing and both nuts before I remove them just to make sure they line up in the same position as they were. You can remove the lock nut with a hammer and drift punch, it will be on there fairly tight. The actual adjustment nut is made to be installed/removed with a pin type spanner wrench, but if you're careful not to chew up the threads you can use a pair of Channel-locks. My Grandpa and Dad showed me how to do that years ago, I've done several of them and never had a problem.
