wheel studs

Does anyone know how to or has anyone changed wheel studs on a gm 12 bolt axle before? I have 7/16 studs in at the moment and I want to install 1/2 or 9/16 inch studs for extra strength. are the standard ones pressed in so can be pressed out or do they need to be drilled out?

Re: wheel studs

Interested to know as well as I'd like to lengthen mine to add spacers to push my rear tires further out to fill our wheel well. They are splined and I'm thinking probably pressed in.

Re: wheel studs

unless converted to an aftermarket screw-in stud, all studs would be pressed in..

having said that, you can knock the old ones out with a large hammer or you can easily pres them out, but you will need to press the new ones in, not drive them in with a hammer...

you will need to specify the knurl size when you purchase/order your new studs. then you will need to drill out the old hole to a new under-size hole... I am not sure what the tolerances should be, but i am sure that you can find that info on the web...

Re: wheel studs

Sometimes you can find the right stud with the same knurl.
Search for Dorman wheel studs.
This pdf came up.
There are several more.

Re: wheel studs

Installing them doesn't require a press. Use a stack of greased washers and the lug nut reversed (so the flat side is against the washers) to pull it flush.

X2 I've done it this way for years. The only difference is I replace the lugnut with a new one just for grins.
