Ball Joint problem
Im in the process of a full frame off restoration of my 1965 c10. Ive encountered a problem with the front suspension. I completely redid the entire suspension. ball joints tie rod ends etc. keeping stock control arms and switched to air bags. I was working on it yesterday and one of the ball joints i had previously installed had popped out the bottom. the entire casing of the ball joint has come loose from the lower control arm. Im glad i noticed this before getting on the road. ive done some searching on the forums found a few solutions that might work.
1 Over sized balljoints. I cant seem to find any for my application. 2 New control arm, im not against this. Ive found plenty of lower control arms for 1975-1986 for around $63 new part number from dorman is 520-113, would this year fit the 60-66? It looks the same. Im not against getting a set of tubular control arms either just trying to save money, any that you would recommend. 3 Which sounds a littly sketchy but ive heard of people welding the ball joint in place Any advice would be greatly appreciated. |

Re: Ball Joint problem
I remember doing it many years ago on a 68. Just tack welded it in three or four places. Should be good for another 100k miles?

Re: Ball Joint problem
You cold also use JB weld to hold it in place. Then when you want to replace it just use a torch to melt the JB weld.

Re: Ball Joint problem
I've seen them welded in before. I have welded the control arm bushings in several times with any problems.

Re: Ball Joint problem
If you have the means I would tack weld it in 3 or 4 places as already mentioned. If you can get the ball joint back into place where it belongs, you shouldn't have to disassemble anything.

Re: Ball Joint problem
I had some stock type dropped lower arms (made by SoLow Suspensions) and had this problem when I went to install ball joints. At that time I didn't have a welder so I took them to a shop and they used a MIG and welded a bead around the outside of the ball joint hole. The heat cause the hole to shrink up and become tight. They pressed in the ball joints just like stock.
