(Updated, what's it worth, may be selling) New toy! 72 GMC swb 4X4
Just got this one in this week - original paint 93K mile 1972 GMC K10. 350, 3-speed on the column (PO put it in the floor), positraction and 16" wheels. Body is not that great, but it sure does run good. I know GMC lost production records, but any ideas how many swb 4x4's?
JQ **UPDATE** Reality sets in!! I've got too many projects and need money to finish our house remodel. I'm debating selling this GMC, but need help determining a value. Any ideas?

Re: New toy! 72 GMC swb 4X4
Thanks! No gate and no spare. Are those wheels hard to find? I've never seen them. Listed on the the SPID as 6.5x16x6pr

They are an optional will theyactully are 16x5 is probably ply rating on your tire I think the tires actually came 65016 I have a couple I could use a couple more if you're interested in selling them I would buy all 4 or if you want to trade them for some Rally wheels or something I have some of those IHOP of copper tailgate but it's a Chevrolet the warden would be different I'll check around see if I can help you find a tailgate and GMC that's a nice truck

Re: New toy! 72 GMC swb 4X4
wow! very very nice and soooooo origonal. I sure hope you intend to keep it that way. with some elbow grease and OCD detailing, you can dramatically increase that trucks value. I hope you are thinking along those lines. there are so few that are that origonal and remain that way.
Wow, even the spiral shocks ar still on it. thats one for the record books |

Re: New toy! 72 GMC swb 4X4
Wrong color Josh and it's a GMC. Probably your best bet would be have me come on by for a visit again. Posi-traction baby! The options were for tires with the wheels being a necessary part of that option. I would restore that 100% stock

Re: New toy! 72 GMC swb 4X4
Nice score! Certainly not very many swb 4x4's out there. It's pretty similar to mine, other than yours is a GMC and mine a Chevrolet. I know there were just over 6,000 of the swb 4x4 Chevys made in '72

Re: New toy! 72 GMC swb 4X4
Even if you combine short step and fleet beds the numbers are definitely low for the Chevrolets, 6,069 fleet and 1,736 stepsides. I think I recall reading a few times that GMC production was about 1/4 to 1/3 of Chevrolets, so anywhere from 1,500 to 2,000 1972 GMC shortbed 4x4's would be a decent guess. However, GMC's were seen as more of the workhorse back then, so it's possible even fewer of these "useless" GMC shortie 4x4's were built, as most GMC buyers would have wanted the longbed.
I know that in my lifetime I've seen very few of them. I do know of one that was destroyed. My dad had a Green 71/72 GMC that was a shortbed plow truck. It was SO BAD (in the mid 90s!) that the cab was literally falling off the frame and the frame was badly badly rusted. I know that one was scrapped. We had no clue how "rare" they were. Reguardless, I don't say this much because GM made a bazillion of these trucks, but I agree that one needs to go back to 100% stock

Re: New toy! 72 GMC swb 4X4
Thanks guys! The truck popped up on ebay a few weeks ago. The owner didn't know what he had and all the listing said was 1971 GMC 1500. I stuck it my watch folder and figured the price would go through the roof! I ended up winning the auction, but the reserve was not met. I immediately contacted the owner and had him call me. After a little negotiating, I owned it! I didn't even know it had a posi in it until I picked it up.

Re: New toy! 72 GMC swb 4X4
I understand that, at least at the Baltimore plant, during this time approximately every 5th truck was GMC... 20%
