Bed side compartments for storage

Pretty soon I'm going to be installing an interior on the 75, this will include the boards on the side of the bed. I was wondering, for a jack, tire iron etc etc if anyone has created storage compartments in the sides of the bed at all. Even if there are maybe pre manufactured items which could be fitted.Google hasn't revealed much apart from ammo cans used in the rear but I want this to look a wee bit nicer than that. I was considering building a shelf / box over the wheel arch on one side and having some hinges in the boards but teh carpet would crack quickly I suspect. any other ideas out there?

Re: Bed side compartments for storage

My 85 does not have the side covers so I get to make them. I've thought about making some type compartment, not over the hump but behind it and behind the spare tire. But I haven't firmed up a plan yet or even sure if I'm going to try it. I'm like you, I'd rather hide my tire iron and jack if I can, plus maybe a few basic tools.

Re: Bed side compartments for storage

If anyone has a chance to measure the depth (between bedside and where the interior boards would be) on a 75 this would be great. Homedepot has some small metal boxes which I was thinking of trying out.

About 3.5" of depth in the middle and close to the bed floor. It tapers down to about 3" of depth at the top rail.
