new regulation on parking brake holding power

I just went today to get my 69 inspected and they said I failed because when they applied the parking brake and gave it some gas the truck moved. do any of you have parking brake that will hold that well if so how can I get mine to so I can get my tags? is there an aftermarket option ?

I have adjusted to the point where it grabs about 4-5 inches from the top starting point and I push it hard enough that it is bending the parking brake foot pedal

Sounds like the cable(s) might be stretched. Or the rear brakes may just need adjusted.

I adjusted them as far as I could I am going to drill a hole in the back of the backing plate so I can adjust with the drum on all the way and not just installed half way where I can get a screw driver in there to adjust

The drum should have a slot in it that will allow you to adjust them with the drum on.

I would call the DMV that handles inspections & ask what the regulations & specifications are on this. I was a Mo. inspector for years & there never was a specification on that. Some of these guys make their own rules.

I had a Texas state inspector license for many years, and all we were required to do was verify that the parking brake was functional, and would keep the vehicle from rolling when it was applied. The law may have changed since then, but I doubt it?

Texas Antique Vehicle license plate and forget about dealing with moody inspectors. It's good for five years and you no longer need to get an inspection.

Yes, there are stipulations that you're not supposed to use the vehicle as a daily driver, but loopholes make it about impossible to enforce. For instance, you can drive it to an event, or to get work done on it. As far as I'm concerned, I'm always "on the way to my buddies house where we are going to adjust the timing". Done deal. Twenty years of doing this and I haven't ever even raised an eyebrow from the po-po.

The problem is that most of the young bucks don't fully understand how to preform the test. They jump in the truck, set the brake, and jam the gas pedal. Then tell you that it failed because it moved. Well, if you have a big block and jam the gas like they do, it would still move even if you were standing on your service brake!
Also some guys pull a number out of ther behind and say it has to hold at 1500rpm or 1???rpm. DOT makes no mention of that.
Basically what they are supposed to do is set the park brake, put it in gear (auto trans) then gradually and gently apply the throttle so that they can "feel" the parking brake.
Double check your brakes. Do a little research on TxDOT. Then go back and ask how they were performing the test. If they are doing it wrong or being rude, ask for their license number. They will prob

Really, it's just a matter of common sense. Anyone with even a small amount of it should be able to tell if a parking brake is functioning properly. Since common sense is so uncommon nowadays, there lies the problem.

Some states allow you to take it to a certified shop to get inspected for lights and brakes. they fill out a form and you take it to your DMV. Might be a better option since you will have your choice of a few certified shops that actually know what they are doing.

My Parking brake wouldn't hold squat even if I stood on it. Turns out the rear shoes wear glazed. Replaced them with Napa premiums and new drums, holds very well, I can make them lock up at slow speed, but even then its never going to hold against the engine.

I say ditto on registering as classic unless you use this for every day use. Doing so relieves you of this unnecessary burden of bureaucracy. The intent of the law is to foster ownership of classics, and to allow for such eventualities.

In my 69 dually put it in bull low and drive away even with a perfect park brake. Won't even know it's on. A park brake is not designed to hold back a running drive line. Put a 4 x 4 in low range and low gear how would a park brake hold that back? Who ever thought that one up has rocks in his head. You could take a brand new 4x4 and do the same thing. Ask the guy that tested your truck what the difference is.

Sounds like the tester is a jackass. Every car I've ever owned I've screwed up and driven around with the parking brake on. That includes new ones right off the lot.

Inspect Parking Brake for and reject if parking brake will not hold the vehicle in place when, with the engine running, the vehicle is placed in forward gear and the engine is accelerated enough to cause a pull on the braking mechanism.

Sounds like a subjective requirement. It's a poorly written rule.
I'd try another shop. It's only $7

Sounds like you have JA for an inspector. Parking brake only required to hold to limit of traction, Never intended to hold under power. 20 years as a Commercial Vehicle inspector for CHP. 30 years as a mechanic. I would challenge him on this, he is not being reasonable at all.

DMV inspection are just another way to fill the politicians pockets with kickbacks , no inspections here and many other nonexistent laws compared to other states , been to Tn lately we have a tax surplus compared to many broke states with democratic bureaucracy . Move and live free of government oppression .
