Re: Short water pump for big block
Somewhere around 1970 they made the switch plus or minus a few depending on if its a car/truck and what options it had
Power steering was what made the introduce the long pump in the first place (or so I've been told) as they had to add another belt on the pulley

Re: Short water pump for big block
I bought mine at NAPA a couple years ago. The engine came out of a 71 motor home. The NAPA part number is 44088. That is also the Gates part number. Amazon sells it for $59.69 with free shipping in the Gates brand. Damn, I paid $100 for it...

Re: Short water pump for big block
Looks like that is only good for the alt on the driver side and old school or no power steering

Totally different brackets and pulleys than the long water pump 73-87 trucks.

Re: Short water pump for big block
If your alternator is not on the driver's side, then I think you need a long water pump. The short water pump does not have provisions for accessories, as they were all bolted to the head or block.

Re: Short water pump for big block
So i noticed that the Camaro, Chevelle , Chevy truck and Corvette have the same part number for 67-68 big block short water pump. I bough the part but its no good. The only holes it has are the 4 mounting holes. It does not have the holes on the passenger side for the alternator and the hole on the driverside for the power steering , damn I have to return this.

Re: Short water pump for big block
Looks like my issue is im using later type brakets. Both my alt bracket and ps bracket need to attack to my long water pump.
Only reason I got a short water pump was because my ps pulley does not allign with the crank pulley . This truck is a headache right now lol. |

Re: Short water pump for big block
On the short water pump systems, there is a single groove pulley that bolts to the multi-groove crank pulley that is a dedicated pulley for the p/s. Can't say on the long water pump, don't have one of those.

Re: Short water pump for big block
ALL V-8's in the 67-72 Chevy and GMC trucks have short pumps from the factory.
