Oil Change on my DD.....how hard can it be ?
I have never failed so hard in my life ..two filters 5 quarts of oil and 3 "gaskets" and I still cant run my 6v53 .... I can not seem to get the square profile "O" ring to stay in the groove in the adaptor ( block ?) and every time I start the engine oil gushes out.. and what is up with the spring being so long that you cant get the retaining bolt started without compressing it ? What am I doing wrong ? Tips tricks advice ?

It's been a while since I changed the filters on the 6V-53 I used to have years ago. Co-incidentally I just changed the filter on my 2-53 last week. But there are also different types out there. Post some pictures for us when you get a chance.

Sounds like you have two gaskets in housing. Double check to make sure. I never have a problem changing mine. And yes you do need to push the filter housing in to start the bolt.

Yeah that would cause the problem, but no the housing is clear ( good light and a pointy scribe and checked there is no gasket in the housing, the trouble is the new one does not seem to actually "Stuff up in there " like I assume it would and it wont stay in the groove... even resorted to a couple of dabs of heavy grease to stick it down... but it wont resist my ham fisted wiggling while trying to compress the spring and line things up .. the fact that I am finally at the age where my arms are to short for my eyesight is only making matters worse.

All good suggestions, however I got the number from the filter I removed and replaced it with the same ... looks the same in all ways and it worked before I took it apart I have a steel canister with a metal and paper element inside... there is a spring under the element to keep it pressed tight against the adaptor and that has to be compressed to get the center retaining through bolt ... started into the block the element inside is not the problem I could leave it out completely and it would have no affect on the steel canister seal. I am not saying it is that hard to push against the spring.. it is just hard to get it perfectly lined up and not disrupt the o ring /gasket and line the retaining bolt up perfectly all in the first go.....I will try to include some pictures soonish it is raining today and the wife is off work .. so certain interior projects takes precedence over my truck . I am curious if the "O" ring ( mine is square...like it was sliced from a very large rubber hose ) actually fits tightly up inside the groove.... or if it just rests kind of lightly on it....I can NOT get it crammed up into the groove like I think it should be....I guess I can not tell if the groove is deep enough to completely accept the o ring... or if it is only like half depth and serves to just position it ?

Also, double check to make sure you have the right application for your filter housing if you haven't already.

Got me to thinking ... the only Local Source I have is NAPA and I may have the wrong element kit .. it might need to be some other gasket/ o ring ..... does anyone have a Good Number or cross reference for a '75 chevy J70 with 6v53 ? as far as oil filter element ?

1133 full flow and 1503 bypass filter. Both come with two designs of seals.

Yea that one. I seem to remember I had to use a small screw driver to push the seal in the groove. I could be wrong it has been a while.

I finally won, put it all together with out an element in it to seat the gasket... then took it back apart and reinstalled the element and it seems to work..... now my oil level is low and I need to go buy another bucket of Delo 100.
