http://www.rockauto.com/en/catalog/c...dy,grille,1384

$294 and shipping is like $22.

Someone tell me this isn't too good to me true?

Re: RockAuto grille

I gave it a shot and bought one.
$320 with shipping was tough to beat. Hope it's not a POS.

You should be okay, RockAuto does sell some quality stuff from Goodmark and others. I just found out a few months ago they sell all kinds of interior parts - bought a few Camaro items and they were great.

Re: RockAuto grille

RockAuto doesn't carry or sell Jack. They just aggregate catalog suppliers and drop ship from warehouses. It's genius, and I wish I would have thought of it.

Someone needs to do it for the restoration parts industry and add value with "Reproduction Quality" reviews, etc...

this is actually true. they called my work yesterday (national auto parts) to ask us about adding an account with us to start drop shipping items.

Re: RockAuto grille

We'll this is about to get interesting. Let us know how Rockauto treats you on shipping the return if you send it back. Because to Dave's point, this place probably fulfills very few parts if any!

Think about it, if you're a big aggregator and you deal with many vendors, all the various shipping policies become a nightmare. They have to pick a middle ground and sometimes lose on shipping. That's why so many online stores that drop ship, and even from only a couple vendors, won't ship to Hawaii. To easy to lose money. Unless they pay for the sophisticated plugins to maintain multiple shipping policies, and through multiple shippers, it could be a loss on products where an automated shipping price calculation is involved. That's why they try to put the onus on you the consumer. Anyhow let us know how the return goes.

I've never ordered from rock; I can get basic junk at O'Reilly or Autozone shipping free. You just call them, they have the stuff delivered to their store, you pick it up in store. If you don't like the part, you drive straight back and stick it up their nose... no shipping involved.

I have a hate for companies that try to make eat some shipping costs for anything I return. You want to be a drop shipper and cut yourself in on some easy profit? Enjoy speaking with American Express if you try to make me eat shipping.... sic 'em boy!

Re: RockAuto grille

I have received parts from Rock Auto that I was dissatisfied with, and they paid for return shipping. A few questions you have to answer on their site, and they send someone to pick it up.

Re: RockAuto grille

so far this experience is the same at Katrina/10's - I answered a few questions, printed a return label, and set up a pick up time with FedEx. Their automated reply to me said as soon as my has been picked up for delivery back to their warehouse, a replacement would be on it's way....

We shall see

I have looked at many of these aftermarket grilles and they all had scratches somewhere. The manufacture needs to add more foam to the box. The thin metal also is sad, make sure if you have to push the truck for any reason, DONT touch the grille, it will bend.....

Re: RockAuto grille

A guy I work with ordered a bunch of LS parts and ended up getting a 3rd brake light instead of a balancer. They tried to make him eat the shipping on that but were willing to exchange it. With some persistence they finally ate the shipping. Personnally I have ordered a ton of parts from them with only a couple of issues. One was the wrong size wheel studs which was the same problem I had at the local stores, including Napa. The other was a Delco Ramey starter. The part was right but the nose was mismachined and could only use 2 of 3 bolts. Rather than return it I just swapped my old nose onto it and called it good. I have saved a lot of money for the 2 problems I had. One trick is to make sure all the parts are coming from the same wharehouse as this can save big money on shipping.

Re: RockAuto grille

Fortunately Amazon is actually starting to carry a LOT of auto parts, and the prices are the same as RockAuto, etc. Usually a little better than Summit too, which is sad because I'm pretty loyal to Summit. But there are two big wins with Amazon:

- Often free returns unless it's entirely your mistake,
- If its fulfilled by Amazon, returns are super-easy and usually free
- No surcharge (other than your annual Prime membership) on smaller free-shipping orders

The unfortunate part for places like Summit and RockAuto is that once you have the part number its too easy to plug it into Amazon and just click "Buy it Now" and have it for free shipping in 2 days.

Some of the smaller items, like starter bolts and stuff that's a dollar are "add on" only, but rarely do I order just a single bolt online!

back when 72 outers were still available from GM i ordered 3 of them. it took multiple tries to secure 3 that weren't scratched somewhere. GM packaging sucked.

Re: RockAuto grille

I won't be buying restoration parts from Rock Auto or Amazon, same as I won't buy from LMC. I would only buy from the specialists who helped make restoring these trucks the easy thing it now is who went through thick and thin for us. Without them, it would not have become the market it has become that is now big enough to attract these big outfits. There's more to it than saving a percentage of price. These small guys, such as our board supporting vendors, know the trucks and, they sell the little stuff, and many sell good used parts... many non-reproduced. I remain loyal to them for taking care of me when they were the only ones out there. I am by far not so rich that money doesn't matter, but I never found quality restoration and bargain shopping to have anything to do with one another. These trucks are basically toys for so many and not something you "have to" have. I enjoy spending money on my pleasure and bargain shop for the things I "have to" buy. I get by on being thrifty.

Good for you and I appreciate your feelings. But speaking for myself only, there are times I simply cannot afford the supporting vendors. I appreciate what they do, and the quality they provide, but there are unfortunately times when the almighty dollar prevails.
I will disagree in that quality restoration and bargain shopping absolutely DO go together. Bargain shopping can be finding parts at a boneyard and fixing them at a fraction of the cost of new. My entire front end sheetmetal was salvaged from a truck with a wrecked bed in a boneyard, and slowly restored - and I got it all from $150. Both quality original steel and found with a bargain, because I shopped, shopped, shopped until I found it. I will continue to do the same for all the parts I need.
All told, as it stands right now, I have less than $4000 in this project. I guess based on your comments, since I have to do this on a budget, it won't be a quality truck...good thing I am building this for me.

Re: RockAuto grille

So far I haven't had a problem with rock auto.
I bought resto parts there just replacement parts.

Last year bought 2 moog struts for a up and coming job.

A day later one showed up.
That nite I got a phone call from rock auto. Saying they were sorry that the other side was out of stock and the supply
Didn't have a restock date.
I patiently waited for 7 months and I got a call they had one in Stock and asked me if I wanted it for the price I paid for the first one. He'll yhea I do.

In a way that impressed me with there services.
But it wasn't easy explaining to my customer that the part was coming for 7 months.

I checked a lil' while ago and they still don't have any right side struts.

Re: RockAuto grille

shipped the first one back Monday morning. Got an email late Monday morning stating the new one was on it's way. Received about 20 minutes ago, and this one is also scratched...in almost the exact same spot. So I'm assuming something in the original manufacturing/packaging process is the issue. I do not believe this is the fault of RockAuto. They are issuing a refund and having me ship back, and have stated they will not sell until they figure out the issue with the manufacture.
So, while I do not have a grill yet, I am not entirely unhappy. I guess I am back to searching.
