Question Off-the-shelf stainless exhaust systems?

Hey guys. Been looking to replace my exhaust that the PO installed (LMC Truck cheap-o) with a quality system. I've only seen 3 exhaust systems for our trucks:

Magnaflow 16643 - $678.97
Flowmaster 817654 - $653.97
Pypes Performance SGT79S - $459.97

I'm leaning towards the Pypes system because of price (and uses X-pipe), but catalog claims it's for "67-82" pickups. No reviews I've seen are from 67-72 owners. Who has experiences with any of these exhausts? I expect a bolt-on experience but don't mind if the downpipes need some modification.

Re: Off-the-shelf stainless exhaust systems?

I put a flow master kit on my friends truck and it fit really good. Very simple to install to.

Have you checked a muffler shop? I had custom duals custom installed for $400 with me bringing the dynomax mufflers I bought off amazon for $80( I think)

Re: Off-the-shelf stainless exhaust systems?

Not really interested in custom work. Although I will probably have to go to a muffler shop anyways to modify the downpipe, I am only interested in stainless steel as I have zero confidence in non-stainless exhausts these days lasting more than one year.

Re: Off-the-shelf stainless exhaust systems?

I used Magnaflow and used their cats. I like the sound. I would look around, on the price. I found a system/kit in Houston for around $550 about 18months ago. If I can find the receipt I'll let you know who the company was.

You can find several photos on my build thread link below.

Re: Off-the-shelf stainless exhaust systems?

I am running the Magnaflow system. My truck is lowered with a fuel cell in the back. The "custom fit" exhaust didn't fit at all. Left side was decent, right side no way. I went to two different muffler shops trying to make it work. The part that goes over the axle had to be cut, sectioned, and welded five times to make it fit right. I agree with your preference for stainless but you can order it in raw stock and take it to your local shop to have them install it, or have them order it for you. Next time around, this is what I will do. In the long run, I ended up paying much more ordering a custom kit then having to pay a shop to make it fit right. BTW..a magnet sticks to my "stainless" exhaust. It is not a very good quality stainless. Good luck!

If any of you were interested in how the Pypes system looks and sounds, I finally got around to making a video after installation:

Re: Off-the-shelf stainless exhaust systems?

My brother very recently installed the stainless Flowmaster system in his original 1970 LWB. It is a well thought out quality system. Installation went good with no problems or modifications. Looks good too. Sounds good but at a certain rpm point has that Flowmaster drone or resonance that is the only slight drawback to me.

Re: Off-the-shelf stainless exhaust systems?

Too bad you don't want custm, because that is best...if you have a good shop. I have an exhaust I had run just the way I wanted done in '04 in galvaneel that is still going strong long after many factory stainless systems have fallen off. The exhaust I had done on my '71 Custom Camper in '89 was still on it in '04 when I got ride of it. If that's not a good exhaust I don't think there is a such a thing. Oh, and I spent less than half of those production systems they knock out by the dozens at a time. But, I've always been that picky about my exhaust systems. I have other more current examples with more current prices still way cheaper, but couldn't tell a story of long lasting with those...yet
