I could not find an answer there. the two set of numbers found on the block behind my alternator are V0820FMS ( V=flint, 0820=month and day, FMS ( this is what I cant find) CFS103652....this number im not sure about. any help? |

Re: Engine ID???
On the left (driver side) rear flange of the block is a casting number.
Should be 7 digits or so. It will give you a general idea of what you've got. I pulled a motor out of a truck that supposedly had this "built hi perf small block". The #s were 3970010. I took those #s off the flange and I have a 69-79 350 4-bolt, 185-370hp out of a car, truck, or corvette. I can't seem to pin it down more than that. It has a stamp above the #s that says "HECHO EN MEXICO", so I researched that being worried the block was substandard, but the info I've found says it should be fine, that GM ran plants there at the time. This info was off a list I found on NastyZ28's site. I printed out the list of #s but lack the tech saavy to put them online. And I'm assuming you have a small block. They have similar info on big blocks as well. Try this: www.nastyz28.com/sbchevy/sblock.php Hope that works! If not, if you share the block # I'll look it up on the list I printed off their site. |

Re: Engine ID???
I have good idea that it is a 350. not sure if it is a 4 bolt main. really want to know what it came out of so I have a better idea of how and what can go into it.

Re: Engine ID???
I have an OLD book of Chevy numbers called 1953-1975 Chevrolet book of numbers, which helps identify components your motor came with and what it's out of, but again, I lack the tech saavy to share it here. (I can't even figure out how to shrink pictures to put on here!)
When I Google the book title I find it for sale on ebay and amazon. It's got a blue cover. I haven't been able to find a way to decode the numbers stamped on the front flange of the block by the alternator. If anyone out there has this info and will share it would be a great help! Thanks! |

Re: Engine ID???
Despite ideas to the contrary, no way to be certain your block is 4-bolt without pulling the pan & actually looking. No biggie either way since stock 4-bolt is no better then two.
Casting numbers off the block & heads is your best bet. The front stampings are good for telling where the vehicle was assembled and what not. In the end a 1975 block is a 1975 block. The rest are add on parts. Which could very well have been changed over the years.

Re: Engine ID???
I have to agree.
The motor I have turns out to be a 4-bolt 350, just like the casting #s showed. On my motor the stamp is MKO3800, which I haven't been able to trace. The casting #s seem to be the most accurate way to identify the block, heads, crank, etc. |

Re: Engine ID???
I looked at http://www.chevellestuff.net/qd/engi...mp_numbers.htm and found a little more info, but probably no more than you already had.
If I hear back from my farmer buddy I'll pass any new info on from him. |

Re: Engine ID???
Engine assembly code V0820FMS
V = Flint engine line 0820 = Aug 20 FMS = 1985 350 from a 3/4 or 1 TON Truck ,160hp ,LT9 RPO code ,4-Barrel Partial VIN... CFS103652 C = Chevrolet Truck F = 1985 S = St.Louis assembly plant 103652 = plant sequence number Taking a whack at the whole VIN of your donor is pretty easy with a 1985 VIN card and the engine numbers... https://service.gm.com/dealerworld/v.../vincard85.pdf Known US-1, Chevrolet Truck-C, LT9-M, 1985-F, St Louis-S, 103652-103652 1GC????M?FS103652 (this is what the partial VIN and the engine code give us) If those match your VIN then it's a "Numbers Matching engine". Just for fun. If I guess 3/4 ton=2, a common 3/4 ton Brake GVW of 8600 = G, 4x4 or 2wd (K or C), body type likely std 2 door cab = 4, and the check digit use the same number as the VIN card example = 3. 2wd 8600GVW Std cab = 1GCGC24M3FS106352 4wd 8600GVW Std cab = 1GCGK24M3FS106352
