Windshield gasket debate/problem

As most of you can probably relate, it is a pain to get a new windshield gasket that fits correctly. I have read many post and threads that speak of the night mares that people have endured to replace a windshield and gasket. Heres my problem.....

I have a 72 K20. My truck has the "shallow" stainless trim around the windshield. I purchased a new gasket and tried to install everything and failed at least 5 times. Upon further investigation I thought I may have the wrong gasket. I went to my local "parts guy" and he said, yes I have the one for the "shallow" trim used on the 71-71 models. I got it home, opened the package and low and behold........its the same as the one I had. It is the Counterpart Automotive gasket. Does anyone know if these are made universally to accept either the shallow or deep trim?

Re: Windshield gasket debate/problem

No 2 different gaskets for 2 different trim styles the early set works best

Re: Windshield gasket debate/problem

So the gasket that accepts the deeper trim works best for the shallow trim as well?

Re: Windshield gasket debate/problem

Are you using new or OEM trim? New trim won't work. I can recommend two local auto glass guys who are experienced with installing the trim/glass if that helps. I've had good luck with Precision brand gaskets.

It'll work, it's just not as easy. The window I took out was beautifully installed with repop trim, so it be done. Given the choice however the OEM trim fits much better.

My OEM stuff had broach marks near the bends, the repro does not.

The OEM stuff is deep enough to "hook" the inside lip in the seal, but the repro is just a little too short.

Re: Windshield gasket debate/problem

I guess I am not familiar with broach marks. I do know that the 2 seals that I have purchased are exactly the same and appear to have 2 lips in the trim channel. An upper one for the shallow trim and a lower one for the deeper trim. One of the seals was supposedly for 71-72 trucks with shallow trim. I purchased a second seal thinking I had the wrong one but they are exactly the same

Re: Windshield gasket debate/problem

I had the same problems as you. The "precision" gasket was used with my original chrome trim and it was installed by my local glass guy. I watched him-he had no problems with the precision gasket-unlike one I got from Brothers....just telling you my experience.

Re: Windshield gasket debate/problem

Having just done this I can saw that the reproduction chrome trim doesn't fit well. The 'L' part that comes in and hooks the rubber isn't deep enough to actually grab the channel that its supposed to. The factory stuff is much better.

That said, it CAN be made to work, but its not ideal.
