Right transmission 1949 AD 3100
I am a new guy. Have been reading your threads for some time.Have got a lot of very good information. Looking for advice. I bought a 1949 3100 in too bad of shape to restore, so I am making a fun work truck. I am putting a 250 in it I already have a posi rear end from a 1975 TA with 273 gears . I was going with a 5 speed from an S10. Would this be a good combination or should I use a different transmission? I want to stay with a manual transmission.

The T5 is a great upgrade over the original transmission. Just make sure you do your research and get the right T5 with the right tailshaft. I think its the truck version and will put the shifter in aproximately the same location as the old one. Also check your final gear ratios, a 2.73 rear maybe really tall with the ratio of the T5

Re: Right transmission 1949 AD 3100
I'd say That and S-10 T-5 will work fine behind a stock or mild 250.
I had a 250. Saginaw 3 speed full syncro and 3.0 gears in mine for a number of years and wished for a lower geared rear end and still be able to do highway miles. Here is a bit of T-5 ID info http://lugnutz65chevystepside.weebly...-astro-t5.html This gives the trans id number plus gives gear ratios and tells what they came in Flathead page but valuable to print out and take with you when you go T-5 looking. http://www.flatheadv8.org/t5-swap.htm I bought An S-10 T-5 out of an 88 4 cylinder from a kid who bought it to stick in a 70 something Nova and then decided not to for 75.00 for my Flathead. I've got a Dodge Dakota AX15 5 speed for my 48 but will need a rather spendy adapter. It came and still is in the truck I bought for the front suspension to use with the Industrial Chassis crossmember. I've got to sell enough off the Dakota to pay for the adapter though. From experience in the past a guy uses what he can find and what his budget allows for. I'll have 320 in the adapter but the trans came in the 200.00 truck that I bought for the front suspension pieces and hopefully I'll sell off the left overs and there is no rush or panic to do that.

I think your 273 will be too tall to take advantage of the 5 speed. Kinda depends on the overdrive gear ratio. They run from .68 to .86 or so. A 330, 353, or 373 are pretty common swaps for this tranny

Re: Right transmission 1949 AD 3100
I'm leaving the 235 in my '57, I got a t5 with a .72 ratio OD and have a 4.10 rear end, with 28" tires expect to run 2000 to 2100 rpms at 60mph. After much research I think I have that right, haven't got it going yet. there are calculators on the web to figure out ratios and speeds with different combinations.
