2 trucks I found on Craigslist.
Hey all,
I have been looking on and off again for a few years for a nice 3/4 or 1 ton 4x4 and now I've found 2 that I wouldn't mind owning. Obviously I can't get both or else I wouldn't have started this thread, but given the options which would you choose. Both have merits. Re: 2 trucks I found on Craigslist.
I think the question is what would suit you better. The second one is outfitted more for hauling and has the big block and Dana 60 - don't know if that matters much for you, AND it's cheaper! But I have to say I like the look of the first better! Not a fan of visors and billet grills. Probably best to see both so you can check out potential rust and hidden issues, then make an informed decision.

I like the 86, but the billet grille and visor would have to go. That's just my opinion.

Re: 2 trucks I found on Craigslist.
I like the '86 a little better being a 1 ton, but the grille doesn't fit what I'm looking for, I'm going to try and look at both and go from there. I really like the '75 as it has a more original feel to it. Plus I'm a sucker for clutch pedals.

I'm leaning towards the 75 myself. That said, they both look like really nice trucks and you probably couldn't make a "wrong" decision here. I like the 75 because it appears to be mostly stock. The 86 has obviously had a fair amount of work done to it and the work may or may not be to the standards you would like.

I personally like the 75 better b/c it's a gmc. I just like gmc trucks over Chevy b/c there are less out there. The 86 is nice to but that grille and and visor would have to go.

I like the 75 best, it just has that look. The 86 most likely has been pounded on a bit, given the Rat under the hood.

75 for sure. Too much extra crap on the other one.

Re: 2 trucks I found on Craigslist.
They are both very nice. If you ever plan to haul anything the 454,th400 is pretty bulletproof. I haul with my 350,th350 and it struggles but it is only a few times a year. A grill and visor don't sound like deal breakers to me. That 75 GMC grill is not one of my favorites either. I say go big.

Re: 2 trucks I found on Craigslist.
Of course, I am sure that you already know that a 3/4 ton or 1 ton will eat a lot of gas, especially with a 4x4 and 454. My primary concern on these very old trucks is rust, so I would inspect the usual rust areas with the truck up on a hoist (if possible) or crawl around under it. I would be surprised if either of these trucks is rust free. I think having a rust free truck shipped from the desert southwest and rebuilding it locally is the best option.

Re: 2 trucks I found on Craigslist.
Take a magnet off your fridge with you and stick it random spots on the rockers and cab corners. Its to make sure if they ever rusted out they replaced them right not pack it full of filler and paint over it just to sell it faster.

Re: 2 trucks I found on Craigslist.
My dad told me the same thing when he found out I bought my 86. He said, "them trucks were rust buckets". So he had me take a heavy duty magnet over that whole truck and I didn't find one little spot. So that reassured myself and my Dad that the truck was restored right or that it never had rust.

Re: 2 trucks I found on Craigslist.
I learned that lesson the hard way before.I bought a crx years ago and those was known to rust out the rear fender arches. This one looked good fresh pain,Well after 6 months the filler they used to fill the rust spots on the rear fender arches started to pop loose.
