What fan shroud will work?

Just curious if I'm doing this right, I searched through threads and found a couple answers, but just making sure.

I bought a 454 out of a '73 or '74 chevy scottsdale a few years back that I'm going to put into my '69. I'm using the '69 chevy radiator core support and a 4 row radiator for my '69. I'm going to use the mechanical fan with thermal clutch so my question is what fan shroud do I use? I'm also using 68-71 bbc engine stands.

Do I need a fan shroud from a 67-72 or would I need one from the 73 or 74 truck? Or would either work?

Thanks,
Ryan

Re: What fan shroud will work?

67--72 shroud is thinner, but if you use the later long water pump, it is going to put the blade even closer to the radiator making the shroud kind of useless

Yes I am planning on using the long water pump. So does that mean the 73 model shroud would be useless?

Re: What fan shroud will work?

Might just take the gamble and buy one from a 73 and see if it drops in... Anyone have any experience with this?

Personally no, I always manage to find the right parts for my conversions. A lot of people have run the longer pumps but it seems most turn to the electric fans for the cooling

Re: What fan shroud will work?

On my 402 in my 67 which I moved an inch forward, I ran a short pump, fan clutch and fan and trimmed my stock smallblock fan shroud. I did not want to purchase a new one for a bbc that I did not know if it fit any better.
The fan sets 2/3 in the fan shroud -- a little farther than normal but my 5 blade fan is a little over an inch from the radiator.

I was considering electric thermostatically controlled fans on my '67 w/350 - less drag on engine?

Re: What fan shroud will work?

I pulled fan shrouds and fans from Chevrolet vans they seem to fit sbc trucks just fine and let you use the bigger fan.
I don't know if they fit a bb though never tried since I used a oe bb shroud.

I also used a lwp on my BBC in and on the correct mounts and it pushed the fan way too close too the rad and the alt and ps pulleys were awfully close too the shroud. I switched too a correct swp set up since.

I saw others make it work though.
Electrics do save ya some real feel seat of the pants power though. I noticed this when I put Electrics in the Camaro and replaced the power robbing dangerous flex fan. It being a manual shift just at idle you can feel less drag on the engine.

Re: What fan shroud will work?

I'm gonna give it a try with my LWP, but if I run into the same problem as you I will look into changing over to a SWP. I'm still a little ways from doing this. Just trying to get everything planned out and find the right parts.

Re: What fan shroud will work?

Post up a pic. I might be interested. I guess the only thing that sucks about these is the cost to ship... What are you asking for it?
