Saw a '70 custom 20 for sale today

Was driving along with the wife and I said oh check out that pickup! Wife said that looks like your body style as we were driving past it. I said yep! She started yelling to turn around to go check it out - I didn't complain about that.

Stopped in to take a look at it within a few min the wife is walking up to the house to get the owner outside to tell us about it. After awhile of checking it out I find out this guy is selling it for his brother so I had to negotiate with him if I wanted to buy it. I was a bit surprised since the wife kept trying to get me to buy it. I had to settle her down!

After taking a thorough look at it I was talked into calling the owner. He has had the truck for about a year. He wants $2500.

The rear end looks to be a Dana 60. Am I correct? Was that common on these? It also has a spare tire carrier - I thought that was pretty neat!

$1500 - $2000. That is an Eaton HO52 rear axle. It also has overload springs behind the axle....

It's got a wood bed which looks really good from what I saw. I heard the truck was in storage for about ten years. The camper topper didn't show up on the spid so I thought maybe it was a dealer add on? Any thoughts?

It seemed like a pretty decent truck. Didn't see any big dents or anything out of the ordinary. It had the usual rust spots - cab corners, rockers, cab supports, the drivers side floor was a bit rusted, passenger side inner fender and radiator support from the battery.

The guy that showed it tried starting it, but couldn't get it to stay running - carb prob needs to be gone through. He only tried a couple times. It couldn't leave the yard either since it's not insured, but does have a clean title.

I never told the owner my offer since I didn't want to offend him since he only had a for sale sign on it for a day or two. I did tell his brother what id be more comfortable at since it needed all that cab work. I left him my name and number so if the owner can't get it sold to give me a call back. I'm thinking about 1500 for it. Is that in the ball park for something like this? That's right around what a half ton would be I think. I don't know if a 3/4 ton adds much more value... What do you guys think??

My .02 it looks to me like it's worth the asking price. From the overall look, it appears that it hasn't been abused. Go meet the guy with cash in hand, and you could probably get it for 2k, and the seller will feel good about it. Use the "won't stay running" to your advantage, and be ready to haul it away right the, 1500 may anger him into not negotiating. How many miles are on the odometer? Keep in mind, the wide open spaces there so the miles are mostly highway. That bed is in great shape BTW.

It looks like it is worth the asking price to me also. I would show him 1900 cash and see if he takes it.

70 long bed c-20 rusty $1,500 is about right 1/3 the value of a short c-10 fleet , toppers are aftermarket owner add on . looks like a good ol work truck .

Yea I saw it had the overload springs in the back as well as a front sway bar. What's the eaton ho52 all about? Was that a common thing on the c20? Or is a bit rare to see? What ring and pinion ratio might I find in these?

Yea I never told the owner my asking price since I figured it might anger him... That's just what I felt it was worth. I guess if he does get the asking price more power to him, but I already went through the same cab rust issue on my c10 and boy was that a job!

Dana 60 = leaf springs

That's a thousand dollar truck. Look at the rot in those rockers and lower door.

Well we couldn't settle on a price. Actually he said 2500 is what he wants. He wouldn't come down at all.

I explained to him what all I saw needed to be done which he was aware of as well as the price for the repairs, but he didn't seem to come down in price! Kinda bummed I didn't get the truck cuz the wood bed was in excellent shape, but the cab needed a lot of work.

I told him I'll give him a call in another week and see if he is ready to wheel and deal...

You got to stick to your guns - I agree $2500 seems a tab high. C20's plus LWB wont bring as much money but - if its the truck you like than I say go for it. Seems like it has good bones
