Cab Swap

Hi everyone, I'm looking to replace the cab on my 77 3/4 ton 4wheel drive. The cab is from an 86 1/2 ton 4wheel drive (part time t-case, IIRC) My question is, will there be any wiring problems? Should I be able to just unplug the wires from the firewall, and plug them into the new cab? Will the gaiges work correctly (both trucks have gauges)? Is there any thing I should be watching for when I remove/install the cabs? Thanks

as far as i know, as ling as you use all of the 77 wiring, and all of the stuff under the dash, you should be fine. you'll also have to use the wiper system from the 77, as the 86 has longer wiper arm stalks due to having to clear the cowl panel (which the 77 doesnt have) you'll also have to use the mounts for the 77, as the 86 cab mounts on the frame were different.

you're swapping in a complete cab? Well I seriously doubt it will go as smoothly as you hope....

the oil pressure guages are different, thats the 1st thing that pops into my mind.. 77 is mechanical while the 86 is electric. does the 77 have dual tanks? I think the wiring is different for the tank setup.

what front clip are you going to run, the 77 or the 86 style? If you are running the 77 clip with a 86 cab, stuff is going to have to be modified to make the hinges and what not work... The tranny tunnels are probably different too, at least the hole for the t-case anyways.. the 86 probably had the np208 which has a funny shifter mounting location, compared to the 77.. I think it can all be made to work well but its going to take some time & effort (what else is new)

im sure others will chime in with their 2 cents... keep us posted on what you do and how it goes

Maybe I should tell you what I'm planning on using from the 77 cab. The gauge cluster (everything: voltage, oil presure, water temp, spedo, fuel gauge), my radio/speakers, dashpad (will I have to remove/change the metal dash under the pad?), the seat, the front/rear windows, power brake booster, ignition switch from the steering colum, hood hinges (will I have to get the newer style?) and front clip.

I found out that the 86 truck is a full time four wheel drive one with a Th350. It had dual tanks, but someone took off the drives side tank. It has a carbed 350. The truck has all the gauges (except tach) including a clock.

My truck, the 77, is a full time four wheel drive with a Th350. It one tank (passanger side). It has a carbed 350, and I'm going to use my guages.

I'd like to get the new cab on before snow flies, which doesn't seem too far off. The 77 cab has no rocker pannels, footwells, and only half a floor.

Thanks

I put a '83 2wd cab on a '75 4x4 frame with a full time tcase. When I got the cab we tried getting the wiring to work, but so many wires had been cut that I ended putting all the '75 wiring into the '83 cab, one thing that made it pretty easy for me to do this was that both '75 and '83 had the wipers mounted on the dash and the headlight dimmer on the floor.

I'm using a '88 clip which must be from a blazer or suburan, it still has the stacked quad headlights, and surprisingly the floor dimmer works with the headlights.

I'm actually looking for a '84-'86 complete wiring harness with dual tanks, power windows/locks, dealy wipers to put in this '83 cab.

the dashes will be different

teh 77 has an angled piece around the gauge cluster 81 up it is straighter you may have to do a little modifications but it should fit
