Solid Motor Mounts - Opinions, Pros and Cons

Hey all,

My 62 had a Pontiac 400 transplanted into it before I bought it and I really want to keep it. The issue is it has the clam shell style block mounts and the traditional chevy square rubber motor mounts used in the Firebird and Camaros. In order to mount it, they PO used some C-channel steel cut down to about 1.5" tall and then welded the motor mounts to it. Then they welded the C-channel to the cross member. I have tried using and modifying 73-87 C-10 perches but they will not fit inside the frame rails when mocked up. I have also looked at 67-72 perches but they sit too high and do not have the flat mounting surface that the rubber mounts need.

So that leads me to my thoughts about using solid mounts. I used them on my 1950 F-3 when I built it and didn't have any problems, but I only drove it for a few hundred miles before I sold it.

What are your thoughts on solid motor mounts? Good idea? Bad idea? Dangerous? Hard on the engine?

True, but there are dozens of companies that offer solid motor mounts.

So a solid motor mount has no rubber product in it. The steel clam shell that mounts to the block has a hole in the front and rear where the long threaded that normally goes through the rubber cushion which bolts to the cross member. Here is the link to a picture of what I have bolted to the block and what companies like Summit Racing sell that mount to the frame.
